The Little Things

It's the little things;
A look, a smile, a nudge
And a whispered in-joke,
Sharing your sandwich,
Bringing an extra apple
And feeding me oranges,
Baking a cake for us
(Even if it didn't rise!),
Making numerous cups of tea,
An arm around my shoulder,
A nod of sympathy,
A glass of wine or two,
A bucket and a taxi cab
When I've had too much,
Walking me to my car
In the rain and the dark
A hug, extra tight and hard
When you know I need it,
A place in your bed,
Sometimes just for sleeping,
Lending a scarf or a jacket
When I'm sick or cold,
Letting me sit with my toes
Tucked underneath your thighs,
A ruffle of my hair
And a playful wrestle,
Staying up for hours talking
Even though you're tired,
A thoughtful word of advice
Or encouragement,
Patiently teaching me maths
Over and over,
A text, a call, an email,
Talking whenever we can;
All the little things you do
Show me you care
And make me love you
Even more.
