That day at school went unbearably slow. We had no exams, so we all sat around 'revising' in all of our lessons. It was an easy day for me - double art then double gym, so I wasn't stressing about not sleeping that night. I didn't need sleep now I had Nate.
I sat down in my private area in the art department (we all had our own little area where we could put up pieces of work, our equipment and pictures that inspired us; although most of my area was littered with pictures of Mollie and I in Paris at Christmas, and Nate and I at baseball games). My area was situated right next to Mollie and Nate; I was sandwiched between them, in more ways than one...
I enjoyed having this little secret, that only Nate and I knew. It was so hard not to feel sorry for Mollie though. I was about to go and talk to her, but I received one of her signature 'leave me alone, or I'll bite your head off' looks, that made me freeze, and turn back to my space. On my way back, I pulled a face at Nate, which made him laugh.
"Why did you just laugh with her?" Mollie demanded, rising from her seat; her gold vest top rising slightly as she did, revealing her golden tan stomach.
"No, Jeremy just told me the most hilarious joke, didn't you Jeremy?" Jeremy was the nerdiest most unpopular boy in our year, and Nate used that to his advantage in this situation: getting attention from Nate was like being given a social diamond, and Jeremy wasn't going to turn down an opportunity to be associated with him.
"Sure, I'm really funny like that!" said Jeremy, edging towards the three of us. Mollie shook her head at him, and gave him a glare. Two in one lesson? Wow, she really wasn't in a good mood today. I decided to finish off my dress, sewing up a few hems, and deciding what colour ribbon to use as a sash: gold or white? I asked Nate - as he was the only person I really wanted to impress with this. I knew I couldn't speak to him, so I texted:
"White or Gold? Xxxxxxx" and held up the ribbons.
"White xxxxxxx" came the response, immediately. "I don't think I like gold as much as I like white xxxxxx" he sent
With deeper thought, I realised the symbolism in this simple conversation. As I looked down at my outfit, I noticed the white chiffon shirt compared to Mollie's gold vest.
Nate had obviously intended for this to happen, as he winked at me and smiled, texting "I love you 10x more than her right now xxxxxxx" before settling down to revise.
I watched him, writing away at his beautiful manuscript, his handwriting curling in all the right places, and in perfect italics. He had a window in his area which had been partly covered by his exquisite drawings of sports grounds and Mollie and I. But there were a few gaps in his collage, which is where the bright sunlight shone through, and lit up his face, as he passed me a note.
"Meet me before gym - we need to talk ;) I love you xxxxxxx"
