Throughout the day the feeling of being watched came back every couple of hours, Mercedes felt like someone was keeping tabs on her except everytime the feeling came back so did the muscle crippling fear of immediate danger, she couldn't explain it and it put her in an uncomfortable mood for the whole day. During dinner time she kept looking behind her and as the horrible feeling came back, her family was sitting at the table oblivious to the turmoil going on in the young woman's mind. Then as the feeling intensified Blue jumped into the room hissing at the window and everyone turned towards it in defensive postures. And just like that the feeling left. "What was it?" Kelly, Mercedes's mum asked her husband Jonathan who shook his head and murmured "I have no idea" "it didn't seem good" added Nikita, the older sister. They were all still in defensive postures until Mercedes whispered "it's gone" and that's when they all looked at her, her mother and Nikita with saucer like eyes and her father suspicious. "what do you mean?" he asked her.
"I don't know, it's weird, probably in my head" dismissed Mercedes.
"probably not" said Nikita
"Mercedes, honey talk to us" said her mother.
"not here" added her father before getting up and closing the window tightly, as if on cue Kelly and Nikita got up to and proceeded to close all the windows in the house. Once they were done the family sat down in the living room, Jonathan, Kelly and Nikta with serious expressions and Mercedes bewildered.
Mercedes felt self-conscious knowing all eyes were on her and looked down in embarrassment. Surely they were making fun of her and her weird feelings of doom. Her father asked her to speak and she started tentatively: “ it started about a week ago. I just keep getting the same dream every night. And then this morning I got the feeling of being watched and it was like something inside me told me to be scared, and I was terrified. Blue started hissing but when I looked out of the window everything was normal. And the feeling left suddenly. It kept happening the whole day and then again at dinner time. Only without the laugh”
“What laugh?” Asked her father gently
“The laugh from the dream. Its evil. Am I crazy?”
“No sweetheart you are not” said her mother embracing her in a warm hug. “Your father will explain everything to you”
“Actually” said Jonathan in a serious tone “I think your grandmother should”
As if on cue, Nikita got up and grabbed the house phone to call her grandmother.
By this time Mercedes was sure her family was not playing and although she didn’t know exactly what was happening she knew danger was ahead.
