Chapter 13
Wingless
Lucas screamed in pain. I knew why, I knew how and I could see the pictures in my head. My face was still covered, I couldn’t bear to look. A sticky liquid dripped on to my hand. I cried out in horror. The angel had ripped Lucas’s wings right off his back. I had caused it.
The ride stopped outside and Lucas whispered to me. “Don’t freak out. I’m going to make people think I’m not there, including you. I don’t want to cause a scene, just thank the guy and leave this place I will meet you at the car.
I did as Lucas asked and walked out. I followed the trail of blood. Five minutes later I found Lucas in the car. I ran to open the door and got in.
“Lucas!” I cried as the blood gushed out everywhere “Are you ok? Ohmygosh. I caused this.” I started to cry.
“Jane! You did not cause this. You hear! It was not you.” He held my face in his hands. He yelped in pain.
“What can I do?” I cried “I’ll do anything”
“Just promise me one thing. It’s all I ask of you.”
“Anything Lucas”
“Promise me you will stay with me forever.”
“Lucas. How could I not? Of course I will stay with you” I promised “Lucas we need to get you home and you’re hardly in any position to drive.”
“I’m not. Am I?” he frowned
“Swap seats with me. I will drive. Rest please.” I begged. He swapped seats and I drove off. I started to worry when he fell asleep but I just carried on driving. I remembered how to get back to Lucas’s house, luckily. Lucas woke up when we were close to the gates. What would I tell Christine.
“I’m going to do what I did before.” He said.
“What about the blood?” I said
“She won’t see it.” We approached the gates and Lucas handed me a set of keys. Christine walked towards the car.
“Hey Jane. Where’s Lucas?”
“Oh he’s in a café in town. He gave me the house key and the car to go get something out of the house.” I held up the keys Lucas had given me.
“Oh ok Jane.” she opened the gates and waved me in. I breathed a sigh of relief a. I parked and got out of the car, opening the door for Lucas even though I still couldn’t see him. Walking into his flat felt strange without him. I got in the elevator and pressed the button for floor 8. Blood dripped. I walked down to his door and closed it behind me. Lucas reappeared.
“You did well.” He said
“Thanks, but there’s more important things to worry about now.”
