11.
"See, she's fine." Sean reassures me for the fifth time since we got here. She's playing with other kids like a normal 5 year old, but I'm nervous she'll snap. I've seen a couple of her episodes over the past few weeks, no wonder other kids are scared of her. "Let's just sit down, and relax ok?" He takes my hand and guides me to a bench nearby. "You know I love you right?" He asks, I smile, "Of course I do, why do you ask?" "I feel like I don't say it enough. Lately we've both been busy, you finding Serenity and me trying to hold the gang together. It seems like we don't hang out like we used to anymore," he's right, I hadn't noticed how little time we've been together since I got back. I've been so focused on Leeann and Serenity, I guess I've been ignoring him. "I'm sorry I've been so distant lately," I squeeze his hand, getting him to look at me. "It's ok, Serenity's your sister, you need to find her. And Tak was threatening Leeann, you needed to put her in her place. Family always come first, it's one of the things I love about you." I kiss him, "I'll do better from now on, I promise," Leeann comes running over and I quickly turn to her, "Having fun?" "I need to go home," "You just got here, what happened?" "I met a boy named Scott and we were playing a game, then he said something mean and I hit him, his Mommy's mad at me. I didn't mean to, I couldn't help it." I stroke her hair and wipe away her tears, "I'll go talk to his Mom ok?" She nods and Sean tends to her as I make my way across the playground to a little boy with brown hair, blue eyes, and a split lip. His mom's wiping the blood from his mouth, "Hi, um..you must be Scott." I stick my hand out towards the boy, he looks up, "Are you Leeann's mommy?" "Yeah, I came to talk to you and your mom." The woman with him stands up, she's pretty tall, so she towers over me. "How old are you? 16?" "I'm 17, almost 18 actually." "You can't be Leeann's mother, she's a kindergartener." "I had her when I was 12, ok? Yeah, yeah, I'm a slut and a horrible person for having a kid so young, save your breath on that. But I just wanted to come and talk to you. I'm sorry about Leeann's actions. She's struggling with her medicine right now. It's hard for a 5 year old to deal with bipolar 2 disorder." The woman looks slightly sympathetic, "You're a teenager, and raising a mentally ill child? On your own?" "No, I have a boyfriend I live with, along with some of our friends. Everyone helps out." She smiles, "That's good to hear. Well, I'm sorry about Leeann's condition, I'm sorry for snapping at her, I wasn't aware of it. Scott says he's sorry for telling her that, and he hopes they can still be friends." The little boy looks up at me with hopeful eyes and I kneel down to his level, "If you really want to say sorry to Leeann, you could help her learn something," "Like what? Leeann's smart, she knows lots of stuff." "She's never been on a swing. You could show her," his face brightens dramatically, "Im good at swinging!" He looks to his mom, "Can I go, Mommy?" She nods, "Every kid should know how to swing. Go ahead," he runs over to Leeann and Sean lets her jump from his lap, Scott says something and rubs the back of his head nervously, Leeann smiles and pats his shoulder, he gestures to the swings and she smiles wide, nodding eagerly. Then they run over and start playing like nothing ever happened. I giggle,"Kids, they get over things so fast," Scott's mom takes the words out of my mouth. "Yeah, I wish older kids could be more like that."
