I liked Sonic. I wrote this as fan fiction, then stopped as I realised what I was doing. You guys/girls can read it now. :)
Part 1
A lone figure wandered through the forest, rain pattering gently on the shadowy canopy above. His golden-orange fur was drenched in water. His shoes were so soaked they stuck firmly onto his feet, as if they did not want to let go. Different from their usual perked position, the animal's ears had drooped down as far as they could.
The fox sniffed sadly, and fresh tears formed in his eyes. They're gone, he thought to himself. Dad, mum... my brother... the elder... everyone.
Two white-tipped tails trailed behind the mourning fox, drooping in despair at the horror that had just taken place. Forlorn, the fox began to look for a place to sleep the night.
Picking up a thin, wet twig, the fox said to himself, "This is like me. I couldn't protect anyone. Now I'm broken in appearance, snapped at heart." The fox then tried to break the stick, but it just bent and refused to give.
Tossing the stick over his shoulder, the fox carried on walking. I have to find somewhere, the fox thought. To tell the people living there what happened. To warn them of the impending trouble!
And I have to complete Gold's dying wish, the fox thought. Gold... he died saving my life...!
At that, the fox fell to his knees, in internal pain and uncontrollable grief, and cried out to the skies. "HOW COULD YOU?!!!" he yelled. "MY BEST FRIEND AND YOU KILLED HIM!!! WHY?!!!"
The fox's two tails curled up in anger. "YOU WANTED THE GEM!!! WE GAVE IT TO YOU!!! YOU WANTED THE FOOD TAX!!! WE GAVE IT TO YOU!!! YOU WANTED THE MONEY!!! WE GAVE IT TO YOU!!! AND WHAT DO YOU DO?!!!"
There was no answer. Just the rumbling of thunder and the rapidly receding sound of the Doctor's aircraft. The fox pulled himself up, then noticed he had a gaping fissure of a wound in his leg.
"What a cheater," the fox murmured. "Numbing my leg so I wouldn't feel the pain."
The fox sighed. "Before what happened, my mum would have bandaged this," he muttered. "But now..." Taking a tentative step forward, the fox placed his hurt leg down. It collapsed suddenly, and the fox slumped to the hard ground.
Giving up resilience and bravery, the fox sobbed until his eyes could produce no more saddened tears. "THEY'RE ALL GONE!!!" he screamed.
Just then, the fox saw a collection of rocks positioned like a small cave, with a tunnel heading underground. Anywhere's better than out here, the fox thought, limping into the inky darkness.
However, he had only taken several steps before something grabbed his wrists from behind. The fox gasped and turned his head around to see who his captor was. A dome-shaped robotic head glared down at him.
"Y-you!" the fox gaped. "You attacked our village!"
"And now we have all of the survivors," the robot droned, punching the terrified fox in the head.
Before Tails blacked out, he went for a last-ditch signal for rescue. "HEEEELP!!!"
*
Sonic the Hedgehog fell out of bed for the fourth time in as many days. "Shouts for help always seem to be my wake-up call," he groaned, rubbing his tired eyes. "But it's probably nothing."
Sonic got back into bed and tried to get back to sleep, but he couldn't. Something nagged him at the back of his mind. His old intuition.
Suddenly, Sonic realised the problem. He couldn't hear any more cries.
Sonic leapt out of bed. "Something bad's happened if the victim can't say help more than once!" Sonic grinned, proud for his 'gift' of logic. He rushed out of his sleeping area and into Shadow's, ignoring the sign hung on Shadow's bedroom door saying, 'I am the ultimate life form. If you wish to die, please enter.'
Shadow was snoring as loud as one of Dr. Robotnik's ships. Sonic began to shake Shadow as hard as he could, exclaiming, "Shadow! Shadow, wake up you snoring faker! We've gotta help someone!"
"Ugh..." Shadow grumbled. "Just let me sleep. I don't care much of your false alarms." Shadow rolled over to lie on his stomach and put his face in his pillow.
Sonic sprinted out of Shadow's room and into Silver's. "SILVER, FOR SOMEONE'S SAKE, WAKE UP!"
"Gyaah!" Silver shouted, sitting bolt upright in bed. Then he noticed Sonic. "Bother Shadow instead," he groaned, settling back down and snuggling into the covers.
"Darn those lazybones!" Sonic whispered to himself. "Well, if no-one's gonna help me help the guy, I suppose I'll have to do it myself!"
Grabbing the key, inserting it in the lock, and twisting it as if his life depended on it, Sonic ran out of the door and into the wilderness.
"False alarm, my foot," he grinned. "At last, some proper action in the neighbourhood." Sonic put on a burst of speed and spurred himself to the scene.
*
Tails, unconscious with his wrists tied behind his back and a slack noose prepared around his neck, was dreaming. Although it was more thinking back to previous events, it was still dreaming.
Tails' active mind rewinded itself to the point where his village was under attack...
The square was quiet while everyone paid their respects to a man that had passed away the night before. As the elder recited the ritual speech for the dead, there was the uncanny rumble of thunder.
The funeral paused as the congregation checked the sky for clouds. There were none.
The crowd broke into fevered discussion. Was a storm coming from over the horizon so great you could hear it already?
The over the horizon part was correct as a flaming bomb whistled into the elder's house and incinerated it within 30 seconds.
"It's Robotnik!" a citizen shouted as she pointed to an incoming fleet of ships.
"But -" the elder said. "We did what he asked!"
"He wanted something else he didn't bother to tell us about!" another person said. "That cheater!"
The man was immediately silenced as a laser shot cut a clean hole through him. The man slumped to the ground, dead.
"Swat-bots as well!" the elder choked. "Robotnik's going all out!"
Chaos ensued as more people fell from laser blasts. The flaming bombs were landing everywhere, setting everyone's houses on fire. A particular woman rushed towards hers. "Miles!" she shouted.
A man, the woman's husband, rushed out and held her back. "There's nothing we can do, Melody," he said.
"I know, Skye," Melody sobbed. "I just hope Gold comes back soon."
There was suddenly a rush of wind, and a golden hedgehog was standing next to the couple. "So what's wrong?" Gold asked.
Melody simply pointed to her fiery house. There was no time for reunion. "My little Miles is in there!" she cried.
Gold wasted no time, kicking down the door and entering the inferno.
Inside, Miles 'Tails' Prower had been playing with his two favourite toys, 'Poncho', a small, soft rag and 'Winky' the teddy bear, when he realised he couldn't breathe well. Smoke descended on the poor child. Tails coughed furiously, but the smoke was beginning to kill him.
Then his bedroom door crashed open, and there stood Gold, Tail's best friend ever.
"Yes, I'm back," Gold smiled warmly. "Now let's get you out!"
Taking hold of Tails' hand, Gold led him through the burning house and out into open air. After Tails had quickly recovered, Gold asked, "Anything else?"
"Poncho... Winky...!" Tails hacked. "Please!"
Gold turned turned and saw the house beginning to collapse. "Very well," he said. His red eyes glowed brighter than ever before, then suddenly - time stopped.
Some people were paused in mid-scream. Others were frozen looking over their dead relatives' bodies. Robotnik's ships were still. It was like looking at a gruesome painting.
Gold quickly hurried into the collapsing house and into Tails' bedroom. The flames didn't burn him - their heat had been taken away along with the flow of time.
Bending down and scooping up Tails' cuddlies, Gold rushed out of the house and dropped the toys in front of Tails' pained face.
This time-freeze won't last forever, and my life energy shall be significantly depleted, Gold thought. But anything for Tails.
And I think I'll have a bit of fun, Gold added. Nothing like a big bang.
Gold speedily positioned all of the enemy ship's guns to point at Robotnik's mothership, and turned all the flaming bombs towards it as well.
Pubbing his gloved hands, Gold grinned. Perfect. His red eyes glowed again, and time restarted.
As Robotnik's mothership was sent down by the embarrassed pilots of the other ships, everybody cheered. Nobody noticed Gold fall to the ground -except Tails.
"Gold!" Tails cried, crawling over to his friend and forgetting he'd just seen his toys right under his nose. "Are you -"
"I'm fine," Gold said. "That time-freeze really took away a lot of my strength."
"Time-freeze?" Tails inquired, confused.
"I freeze time, which is why I can sometimes do things so quickly," Gold explained, nodding towards the crashing mothership.
"That was me," he sighed. "Frozen objects maintain their potential momentum. As soon as I end the time-freeze, they carry on moving. And yes, I can move things in a time-freeze."
Tails stopped himself from asking the answered question. Instead, he asked, "Did you get Poncho and Winky?"
Gold pointed to where Tails had been about a minute ago. "There," he groaned.
Tails rushed over to his toys, picked them up, then hurried back to his fallen comrade. But before he could reach Gold, he felt the shot of a laser blast singe the fur on his leg off his skin.
The swat-bot that had suddenly appeared in front of Gold laughed in a metallic voice. "That was just a warning shot," the bot pronounced. "Now prepare to be roboticized in the name of Dr. Robotnik!"
As Tails fell backwards, cowering, Gold heaved himself up onto his feet and saw the trouble. Anything for Tails, Gold thought.
Including sacrifice.
With a loud cry, Gold launched himself at the swat-bot using his signature spinning air strike attack. He ripped a huge hole in the middle of the robot. However, the swat-bot managed to live with the injury, and continued to advance upon the now mortally terrified Tails.
Gold leapt again at the bot, but this time held on to the metallic casing and began to pummel the bot to a pulp.
"Tails!" Gold called out. "Run!"
"I'm not leaving!" Tails shouted back.
"I won't be able to hold them off for much longer!" Gold replied, his punches becoming less powerful as his strength ebbed away. "Run while you have the chance!"
"No!" Tails said stubbornly, folding his arms. "I'm not going anywhere!"
"Find my friends!" Gold carried on, ignoring Tails' reply. "Sonic, Shadow and Silver! They're all hedgehogs, just like me..." Gold's voice died away as the sizzling hole through his chest cooled down. Gold fell to the floor, and turned to dust.
Tails came round and out of unconsciousness. His eyes snapped open. "GOLD!" he yelled. "HEEEELP!"
*
Sonic paused in mid-sprint as he heard the cry's echo enter his ears. "That's just made the rescue even more important," he grinned, following the rebounding sound as he punched the air. "WOO-HOO!!!"
Weaving in and out of the trees, Sonic contemplated. Gold, huh, he thought. Never thought I'd hear about him again. I wonder if this guy I'm trying to find knows anything about him.
In his haste, Sonic rushed past a cave with an eerie, candle-like glow. But, realising his mistake, Sonic retraced his steps back to the underground tunnel.
Sonic's ears twitched as he caught the sound of radio static. Faint words rolled up the earthy hole. "Dr. Robotnik, sir! Come in! We have them all! I repeat, we have them all!"
"Robotnik?" Sonic said to himself. "Not good." He sped down towards the underground light.
Coming out of the tunnel revealed a huge cavern. In the middle stood a large swat-bot, bigger than any regular robot Sonic had seen. It was kneeling over a radio, a remote in one hand and a rope in the other. Sonic's pupils followed the rope over a pulley and to an unconscious fox. The rope finished by wrapping round the animal's neck.
That seems a bit old-fashioned, Sonic wondered. Why'd the swat-bot go for the ancient tactic?
The robot must have sensed Sonic's thoughts, because it stood erect and turned to face the intruder. Sonic immediately settled into his attack position.
"Sonic the Hedgehog," the bot droned. "I have been expecting you."
The robot pulled the rope down and tied it to a hook in the ground. On the other side of the pulley, the fox was raised into the air by the throat. The swat-bot then pressed a red button in the centre of the remote. Gnashing, robotic teeth suddenly popped out of the walls, ceiling and ground surrounding the two-tailed victim.
"Get the victim out of this one, Sonic," the robot said. If robots had had mouths and varied tones of voice, Sonic could have sworn the robot was mocking him.
The fox's eyes suddenly opened wide in fear. Sonic then noticed the fox's arms were tied behind its back, disabling it from saving itself.
"The animal dies in 30 seconds," the robot teased. "There is nothing you can do."
"30 seconds is way too long for me!" Sonic joked, executing a perfect spinning air strike through the body of the enemy.
The robot stared blanky at its circuitry and said, "That's the same as -!" before blowing to smithereens.
Obviously this robot didn't know what I was capable of, Sonic smirked. Now, where's that remote?
Sonic glimpsed a smoking rectangle blast out of the dark cloud. Aha! he thought, leaping up and swiping it.
10 seconds had gone. The fox was clearly suffering as its head lolled forwards. Knocked out again.
Sonic peered at the remote through the smoky remnants of the destroyed swat-bot. "Which button?" he muttered, glaring at the multicoloured arrangement. He couldn't take too long - the fox's life was in his hands.
15, 14, 13... his internal countdown went as Sonic desperately tried to make out the miniscule writing. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5...
"Gotcha!" Sonic crowed as he pressed a light grey button. The gnashing mouths all blew up at once, leaving the cavern clear for rescue.
The fox's body was twitching - but it wouldn't be in 3 seconds unless someone intervened. So Sonic thought fast. Grabbing a sharply pointed stone from the explosion's rubble, he threw it with deadly accuracy at the rope holding the fox up, snapping it in two.
The noose went slack, and the limp body of the fox slumped to the ground. Sonic rushed over and put the animal's chest to his ear. Grinning, Sonic was happy with the result.
Beating slowly, but he's alive, Sonic thought, hauling the fox onto his back and hurrying back to his log hut. I can't wait to see Shadow and Silver's reactions.
*
Tails was running through the wood, dodging laser blasts and falling trees with his mum and dad. The swat bots were advancing steadily, getting closer with every clanking step.
"I can't run any more!" Tails shouted, tripping over his own knackered feet.
"Just a bit further," Skye panted. "Sonic's hut is in the middle of the forest. We have to hurry!"
Dr. Robotnik's minions were moving faster, making the flee even more dangerous. Tails' legs were on fire - pain was coarsing through every vein of his body. But gritting his teeth, Tails focused on the fact that every step got them one bit closer to safety.
"Mum?" Tails asked Melody. "Who's Sonic?"
"Oh, he's such a dear little fellow," Melody replied. "Looks just like Gold, except he's blue. Likes to run at supersonic speed, and to wreck Dr. Robotnik's evil plans."
"Well, that sounds okay," Tails breathed. "He'll help us - right?"
"Of course, my baby," Melody replied.
Suddenly, a tree fell right in front of the group - as well as a mongoose.
"MUM!" Tails screamed.
"There's nothing we can do, son," Skye said calmly. "We have to get to Sonic."
Those were his last words as another laser blast cut clean through Skye's body. Now both of Tails' parents were dead - and the fox was on his own.
The victorious swat-bots advanced to claim their prize. One picked up Melody - another Skye. Two more handcuffed the grieved Tails, and they began to drag the trio back to Dr. Robotnik's mothership.
Tails had no intention to go back. He needed to find Sonic! Tails tried to stuggle against the handcuffs, but to no avail. The swat-bots simply turned a screw on the side of the restraints and excruciating pain was applied on Tails' wrists.
Cringing, Tails reluctantly followed the bots. But his thoughts still bubbled inside him. They killed my family.... they killed my friends! They destroyed our village!
Tails became more angry every second. His vicious thoughts pumped to every point of his body, feeling their way to the surface. Tails' body suddenly turned jet black, apart from the white tips of his tails. His eyes glowed with white hatred - there was no pupil or colour except for a never-ending blankness.
"Hraaaargh!" Tails yelled as he broke apart the handcuffs and slashed the nearest swat-bots in half with his now razor-sharp tails. The other bots spun around, surprised to hear the commotion.
Tails was silhouetted in the smoke from the annihilated swat-bots as he raised his fists. "YOU WILL PAY!!!" he screeched, using his two tails as a propellor to launch himself at the swat-bot holding Melody.
He crashed through the amazed robot at an almost immeasurable speed, then grabbed its gun and shot down the rest. Tails cackled evilly. Revenge is so sweet, he grinned.
But, suddenly, Tails came out of his dark transformation and stared at the carnage. "I... did this..." he whispered to himself. Running past his mother and father's bodies, he melted into the foliage as he began to search for Sonic - Gold's wish had to be fulfilled.
*
"The guy's having a nightmare."
"Hmph."
"Oh, listen to Shadow go humpha humpha humpha!"
"Hmph."
"Shadow, stop being so... so... well... uncaring!"
"Hmph. Look, Silver, we don't have to put up with this little pipsqueak."
"Shadow, I've told you before and I'll tell you again. This dude knew Gold!"
"I DON'T CARE!"
"YOU SHOULD!!!"
"WHY?!!!"
"DO YOU EVEN REMEMBER GOLD?!!!"
"I NEVER EVEN MET HIM IN THE FLESH! ALL I SAW WAS SONIC AND YOU AND HIM ON THE COM-LINK FULL SCREEN, HAVING THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE WHILE I WAS STUCK BACK HERE, DOING THE HOUSE-KEEPING!!!!!!"
"GUYS! Cut it out! He's stirring."
"You woke him up Sha -"
"SHUT UP!!!!!!!"
Tails suddenly sat bolt upright, and immediately wished he hadn't. The pain in his leg and around his throat burned ferociously - and it seemed his arms were broken too. He slowly lowered himself back into a comfortable bed.
Hold on! Tails thought. A bed? Where am I?
Tails did not want to open his eyes - he was afraid that there were swat-bots surrounding him. However, the voices had sounded more... living than mechanically generated speech. Fearing the worst, the 11-year-old fox prised open his eyes.
Blurring into focus came a green-eyed, blue haired figure with slick spikes down his back. His warm smile reminded Tails of Gold. Maybe this was one of the hedgehogs Gold had mentioned!
Tails went for it. "Are you... Sonic?" he asked weakly.
The blue hedgehog clasped his hands in delight, leaning back on his chair and placing his shoes on the bedside table. "Corrrrect, little guy!" he beamed. "Sonic's the name and speed's my game!"
"Hmph," said another being behind Sonic.
Tails blinked hard, and the being came into focus. It was still a hedgehog, but it was black and red, with its hair in five hooked spikes, one going up, two going diagonally up on both sides, and two horizontal. The spikes on the back were still there, though. The creature's eyes glowed a very dark red.
"That's Shadow," Sonic introduced, noticing that Tails was staring at the black hedgehog. "I suppose Gold told you about him too, Shadow being the 'ultimate' lifeform."
"Nnng," Shadow grumbled. "I AM THE ULTIMATE LIFEFORM AND YOU KNOW IT!!!"
"Even without your chaos abilities?" Sonic said sweetly.
"Well..." Shadow said, embarrassed. "... ... No, not any more." He looked up through the window. The sun had just peeked up over the canopy, shining its light over the glistening dew-dropped grass.
"I hate Dr. Robotnik," Shadow muttered. "Taking away my chaos abilities for his own evil was the worst thing he ever did. I thought he was going to be hospitable." Shadow snorted in contempt. "I was a fool."
"We promised we'd get them back, and we will!" a silver hedgehog on the other side of Tails said. This hedgehog was slightly different - his gloves were more metallic, as well as his boots, and mysterious blue-lined patterns drew themselves on his palms. His hair was a mix of Sonic and Shadow's style - his bright blue eyes matched the glow of the rings on his gloves.
"Sorry I didn't introduce him," Sonic said. "That's Silver the Hedgehog. He's from the future, if that interests you at all."
"The... future?" Tails said.
"Yeah," Silver chuckled. "Used to come back to this timeline to tell Sonic about impending doom. We took out the cause - the future returned to normal."
"You can't exactly call the future 'normal'," Sonic pointed out, "What with all of those time-space corruptions and what-not."
"Well, yeah," Silver grinned. "Anyway, one day I just gave up on living in the future with Blaze the cat, princess of the future -"
"And your girlfriend," Shadow cut in. Sonic simply raised his finger in a warning sign, and Shadow tightened his lips together, afraid to say any more.
"- and so I decided to just take my last journey to the past," Silver carried on, oblivious to Shadow's remark.
"Eventually, Blaze realised I wasn't coming back. So, she came back to the past using Chronos Control. Our reunion... didn't really go so well," Silver smiled, reddening.
"Blaze seems to have slight trouble with meeting new people," Sonic muttered. "She once thought I was to blame for her homeland being ravaged by wildfires because I'd found a Sol Emerald. Not that clever, that cat."
"And so Blaze nearly killed Sonic, then helped him to foil Dr. Robotnik's best plan he'd made," Shadow finished. "One of the most boring stories I've ever heard."
Silver slapped his head. "All stories are boring for you unless they include you being 'awesome', Shadow," he groaned.
Shadow frowned. "You'll pay for that," he snarled, launching himself at Silver. However, Sonic managed to grab Shadow's leg, and Shadow fell flat on the ground.
"You guys are not making a good impression to this guest," Sonic chided. "So settle down, get a chair, whatever, but stop fighting!"
Sonic's stern voice activated something in Shadow and Silver. The duo immediately did what Sonic said. Sitting down into their chairs, they tried to look interested about the stranger lying in Sonic's second-best bed. They were failing miserably.
Tails was in awe. It was as if Sonic had some magical power. "I can see now why Gold told me to find you," Tails accidentally said out loud.
Sonic smiled. "C'mon, Shadow, that surely proves he's a friend of Gold's."
Shadow's face remained strained. "Not quite," he said.
"Very well," Sonic said. He turned to Tails. "I've got a fool-proof way of discovering the truth."
"There is one thing that all of Gold's friends find out eventually," Sonic said to Tails. "Gold is able to manipulate something. What is the something, and what can he do?"
Tails knew Sonic was testing him to see whether he really knew about Gold. But Tails did not need to be tested! He knew Gold and that was that! Sonic's friends must be very dumb to doubt him!
"I don't have to take a stupid test to tell you that I knew Gold and that I know he's dead because he dissolved into dust!" Tails shouted.
Sonic was the only one who wasn't surprised by Tails' outburst. Shadow tried to say how Tails couldn't have been a friend of Gold, but Sonic cut him short with a simple finger raised into the air.
"Turning to dust..." Sonic muttered. "I think I've seen that before."
Tails was amazed. "Really?" he said.
"I didn't see it," Silver said, "But Sonic told me about when he returned to this multiverse."
Now Tails was confused. "What's a multiverse and how many are there?"
Sonic gave him the answer. "There's definitely one multiverse - named Prime. All of the other multiverses revolve around Prime's past and future - the people's desicions and abandoned thoughts, changes in destiny and the mystery of the future. Most multiverses disappear for a bit - but they always come back.
"I'm Sonic Prime," Sonic announced proudly. "Silver's Silver Prime, and of course Shadow Prime is that black-hearted grouch right there." Sonic pointed to Shadow's frowning features.
"We are in the Prime multiverse at the moment," Sonic continued. "Prime is one of the only multiverses that's in this hyperverse for its entire time of survival. The only other multiverse that abides by this rule is..." Sonic's voice trailed off.
"Is what?" Tails urged.
"I'm sorry," Sonic replied. "I forgot about the hex that meant you couldn't say the name of that multiverse, and its ruler."
"A... hex?" Tails wondered. "Why?"
