No. A placemat, where I am from, is a small mat that goes underneath a dining plate on a table. I am not sure why anyone would step on one of them to progress in life?. I do not understand your attempted metaphor. Even if it did make sense I am equally as puzzled as to why anyone would step on friends for their own personal gain. Surely if someone done this, they them-self would not be a friend to this person or people they stand on.

Well they don't stand on them literally I just mean that u need them to get through Life. I mean the placemats by the door and that you need them to like wipe your feet of. Where I am from a placemat is a mat to wipe your feet on and to put your dinner on

No. I am fairly certain this is not just a British thing, those are called doormats. I am not aware of any cultures that eat their food off of them, although each to their own as they say. So my interpretation: Friends are an essential part of life. You can be mean to them but at the end of the day they will always be there for you. Is that what you mean?.
