Lost Identity

Your fingers rest around the mug, rubbing the surface worriedly. Once every few minutes you'll bring the coffee to your lips, not because your thirsty, but simply because that the only thing to do to fill the spanning absence. The coffee shop is for the most part empty, only a small old lady nibbling an almond biscuit in the corner, and the staff leaning against the countertop and chatting among themselves. Your eyes never once leave me.
"So how are things at school, Jules?" I peer down at the tabletop.
"Okay, I guess."
"Have you settled in okay?"
"I suppose, Dr Pern."
"Have you..."
"No." Dr Pern pursed her lips but says nothing more on the subject. I wish they'd leave me alone. What was wrong with how I was now?
"Nothing?"
I felt like shouting at her. Look, when I remember something you'll be the first to know, okay?! She reached out an awkward hand for mine.
"It's important we try to overcome your amnesia, Jules."
That's all they ever cared about. My memory.
"I need to go do homework. Thank you for the cocoa."
"Okay, Jules. And, Jules? It's important you try, okay?"
I nodded and ducked out the caffe. I knew I would never be the same person as before the amnesia. I'll be like this forever, completely different from the person before. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide. The question was, which was I?
