The elephant sat alone He was sad A tear formed in his big brown eye and gently fell He would never forget How could he As he gazed out into the night sky He could only remember
Right then a noise nearby startled him Rising up he went to investigate Sitting alone on a stone he found a mouse The mouse also staring at the stars The elephant sat back down
"Do you remember the dark times too mouse?" the elephant asked
The mouse looked at the elephant and thought for a moment
"I am looking forward to the good things which are yet to come. Would you like to join me?"
The elephant could not see what the mouse could see, but he wanted to stay. He liked the company. They both sat and stared at the stars.
After a time the elephant spoke "I am old and wise and big and strong. Yet I could not stop my best friend from dying. Now I can only remember the past we had together. That makes me so sad. I wish i could have him back." the tears began to fall again
The mouse softly replies "I am only a mouse. I am small and insignificant to many. But my heart beats as does yours. I have know suffering also. But why dwell on the past? No matter what, you can not change it. Maybe together we can look forward to creating our own future dreams?"
As the sun rose upon them the elephant lifted the mouse to sit between his massive floppy ears
The elephant would always remember the good times he once had. They would always make him smile, sometimes cry. But in a good way. Now he knew he had many more to look forward to with his new friend and that helped his heart feel better
As their shadows disappeared into the horizon the elephant thought
"Often in those moments when all seems lost, it could be the smallest things which lets you see the light again..."
