-Not something I world recommend reading to young children, the ending is a bit 'dark' in tone and will likely upset some adults too.
Once upon a time in the not so fantastical lands of Knaresborough lived a little boy. The little boys name was Blu and he my friend was a very greedy boy indeed.
Like most little boys of his age he had a mother and a father. They both worked many long hours, in a factory recycling old rope, in order to make sure that their little Blu would not want for anything. Lucky young Blu never did want for anything but like most boys his age he hated the most important meal of the day, breakfast.
One morning his mother gave him a bowl of Fluffypops. These Fluffypops are not unlike a certain popular brand of breakfast cereal. Think 'rice' and I am sure you will get the idea.
The Fluffypops had been submerged in a bowl of milk and Blu was expected to eat every last grain of rice. He point blank refused his mothers request for she had not sprinkled a spoon full of sugar on them. Sugar was Blu's most favourite thing in the world, except for his gamestation of course.
So Blu cried and cried until his mother took away the sugarless, drowned puffed rice. He never ate them again. Blu's mother protested and told Blu it was best to start the day on something nutritious and wholesome.
She tried feeding him porridge, but he said "NO!".
She tried feeding him bananas, toast and eggs but he screamed "NOOOOOO".
Then she tried feeding him bacon but he reminded her that they were Jewish, still he said "No. No. No and no!".
Blu's mother warned him each time he refused, that the Grumbles WILL get him one day if he did not eat at breakfast time.
"But what are Grumbles, Mother?" he asked, this information was new to him and he needed to know.
"Well my little Blu" she said, taking a second to think. "Grumbles are the little people who live in your tummy" she continued. "They look after your body so if you eat good things they make sure to keep you healthy, they eat some of what you eat too, you see , so if you eat nothing they too eat nothing and that's when they get angry".
Blu was amazed, he hadn't learned this at school yet, but thought that if his mother knew, maybe it was something only big boys and girls learned.
Blu was too clever, he knew he could outsmart the Grumbles in his tummy and his mother too. He apologised for not eating the Puffypops and Fluffypops and the eggs, toast but not the bacon. He told his mother that he didn't feel well so couldn't eat them right now. He promised he would eat something at school.
So he packed his bag and set off for school. When he reached the end of the street a strange noise came from his stomach. He knew he didn't need to use the toilet and could not make heads nor tails of it. He continued walking. When he reached the end of the next street his stomach began to shake AND was making the noises he heard earlier.
"Oh no. The Grumbles are going to get me!" .
He ran as fast as his legs could carry him to a place where he knew he could get something to eat. The Newsagent. He grabbed a packet of chocolate and paid Mr Kumar with a hand full of bronze coins and the occasional silver one and ran again.
The Grumbles were getting louder and louder with every stride. Blu found himself in the park, his mother and father would take him to on weekends. Blu was surrounded by people.
"Where should I hide?" he asked himself. "Ah, the cave, the cave Father showed me" he told himself and headed to it faster than fast. The cave was deep in the park, hidden by trees and off the established paths used by tourists..
Needless to say he devoured the bag of chocolate in world record time thinking this snack would keep the Grumbles at bay. The Grumbles were still angry.
The cave was dark and he could hear more noises. Blu was scared. "I promise I will eat porridge tomorrow before school, just don't get me" he told his tummy.
Noises, laughter and footsteps began to echo off the walls of the cave.
"Hello" said the voice "What is your name?. Do you want a sweetie?".
Mr Kumar was the last known person to speak to little Blu that day. The nationwide effort to locate Blu had failed.
