The Three days of Magic.
Magic in the Kingdom of Rikom was outlawed, that is every day except for three. The Festival of Everlight, which takes place every four years.
On those three days you could commit to as much magic as you wanted without fear of reprisal. The problem is, without fear of punishment everyone goes mental with the magics. It becomes effectively an arms race and then the really strong attempt to overthrow the ruling family. I say attempt, there hasn't been a failure of a coup since records began. Someone always seizes power. It's the way of the world. It's how we progress and grow. Each usurper leaving an everlasting finger print on society, good or bad. This festival was different, the mages could not deploy their magics. Their abilities were gone. Scholars were dumbfounded. Never has this happened and nothing in the ancient texts could be found to suggest what to do to fix it.
One man, the wisest of the Scholars, by the second day of Everlight came to what he believed was an acceptable remedy for this baffling interruption to change. He suggested that the fighting should stop and the mages striving for power should discuss and vote for who the rightful new ruling family should be.
The ruling family to say the least were not pleased. They had the scholar executed for treason.
