Just a blog with some random questions I have came across and my own answers.
1) Evolution can not be, simply because there are monkeys today.
- Monkey and man evolved from a common ancestor. We did not evolve from monkeys. Have you noticed how there are quite a lot of different variants of dog... same thing. Evolution applies to pretty much everything.
2) God is real, you can not prove otherwise.
- It is you who should prove that he does exist. If I said that I can fly, it would be down to me to prove that I can. I do not understand why the burden of proof is flipped whenever a God is being discussed.
3) I am a creationist.
- Dinosaurs and man lived at exactly the same time did they?. You really think that every single species and sub species of animal, plant, bird etc that has ever lived cohabited the earth at the same time?. See number 1. There has never, ever been a case of dinosaur fossils found with human remains, nor has there ever been any dinosaur fossils found with one of our many (modern era) ancestors. The Flintstones was only a cartoon. It was not a documentary.
4) God loves everyone, equally and unconditionally.
- Say that to his millions of devoted followers who live in poverty, the ones who who have no option but to give there children dirty water to drink that will make them ill or kill them. How's about those who are too young to even know about him. The kids with aids and cancer. There are many more examples. Do you get the gist of it yet?.
5) Because you do not believe, you will go to hell and burn for all eternity.
- Wait, doesn't God love me unconditionally?. Nothing says I love you like eternal torture.
6) The bible is the word of God so should be taken literally.
- Please see above answers and all following answers.
7) Believing in God gives me comfort and will prepare me for death.
- Everyone dies. It is a constant of this world we live in. If believing in God makes it less scary for you, that's OK. If it helps you, brilliant, I wouldn't take that comfort away from you even if I could. Everyone dies, whether theist or not, it is 100% guaranteed. It is what you do with your life that is important, you do not need me or a book written a couple of thousand years ago to tell you what to do with it.
8) God is the true God, your God is not.
- How did you come to this assumption?. So far, humanity has known about 3000 supernatural beings and out of those about 2800 could be considered as gods or deities. The Christian religion incorporated many of the practices and traditions that earlier religions and belief systems had as it spread across the globe. Have you ever wondered why there are many branches of Christianity?. Here is a list: •Roman Catholic (I used to be one of these) •Eastern Orthodox • Oriental Orthodox •Anglican •Pentecostal •Protestant
Yes, they worship the same God but are heavily influenced by what system and/or traditions came before them.
9) I don't follow the teachings of any religion but I do believe in God.
- Which version, or is this someone you made up?. Is it that you believe that someone created everything and then disappeared forever, so far, for no reason at all?.
So just to make sure I understand, you have invented a supernatural being who has done nothing since creation, and you believe that this being was real. He or she is not a religious figure but you think he/she existed at some point. Despite having no proof at all and for some reason you are willing to ignore the FACT that you have invented him or her?.
Funny thing is, if you tell enough people about this new God, I am willing to bet that some of them will believe you. Of course, you will be questioned about this new God and will have to invent some kind of backstory for it. Congratulations, you have just created a new belief system.
10) Science can not explain the wonder of the universe. Therefore God created it.
- What?. Science does on a regular basis explain the wonders of the universe. If they did not, you would not be reading this now. Science discovered gravity. It discovered light, it discovered the planets of our solar system. Before science these things were not known. Now these wonders are known and they are taught to our children in schools.
Yes, there is a lot we as a species do not know of the universe but every day we are answering questions and making amazing discoveries. Science is not content to sit in a corner and stay quiet, it knows when it is right and it knows when it is wrong. Could you imagine the following scenario at a school today:
10 Year Old Boy : Teacher, why do things fall to the floor when they are dropped?.
Teacher: God.
10 Year Old Boy: OK. What is that bright light in the sky during the day?.
Teacher: God.
10 Year Old Boy: I see. What about that big round thing that I can see at night and sometimes during the day, is that God too?.
Teacher: No, that's the other God.
10 Year Old Boy: The other God?, silly me I forgot about him. But why is it that its dark at night and bright during the day?.
Teacher: Erm... the sacred texts say that God and the other God have a fight and the night God only wins at night but the day God wins during the day...
So, do you see how short sighted your claim is. If this was still taught today in your child's school, we would not have science to explain the brilliant stuff of the universe. Of course if this conversation really did happen, the 10 year old would keep asking why these things happen and one of two things would happen, he would either be branded a heretic and sent for re-education or he would become Newton, Einstein or Hubble and the sad thing is that he would still be branded a heretic by society. And do you know what, without Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Edwin Powell Hubble you would not be reading this now.
11) Why should I listen to you.
- You don't have to. I am human, I do not claim to know everything about anything. I was once like you until I had a eureka moment. I had questions that religion and faith could not answer. I went looking for answers myself. I have not found everything I need to know and probably will not before I die, but I will try. When I have answered these questions today I have deliberately left out evidence to support my claims (where evidence is needed). Please search for your own answers. You will not be disappointed... unless you were really looking forward to an afterlife.
