"Hey, look!" Paul pointed to a huge bush covered in snow. "Our hiding place!"
He beckoned us to follow him, crawling into a hole in the bush. I crawled in after him, and Sally followed from behind.
Inside was a fairly large, empty space, with a canopy of snow-frosted branches overhead.
"We could live here," Paul whispered. "We could hide here."
I looked at him, raising my eyebrows.
"That could be my room," he pointed to a little alcove of branches. "That could be Sally's. And that could be Em's."
He looked at us, smiling eagerly.
"We're the last of human civilization," he cried, his eyes widening. "Em, you have to gather the kindling for the fire."
I looked at Jess incredulously. What had happened to the sixteen year old guy we had just been with? It seemed a child was with us, a sweet-faced, pink-cheeked child.
"We have to be careful," he instructed. "There are bears on the loose." He pointed to me. "AH, THERE'S ONE!"
He grabbed my arms, and we started wrestling, holding each other's arms, grabbing each other's hands, trying to shove each other into the snow. Sometimes I'd grab a handful of snow and press it into his hoodie, and he'd shake his head, grabbing me again, trying to push me onto the ground, grinning mischievously.
"Jess, you need to go hunt for food," Paul ordered. Then he smiled. "Obviously, if we were the last of civilization, I would be the leader. Then I could boss Em around."
I rolled my eyes, and made a quick attack on him, but he grabbed my arms and held me still, smiling triumphantly.
"You guys had better stop," Sally warned.
After a little while, Paul got tired of being the last of civilization. We crawled out from our hiding place.
And this, my dear Opussians, is where the real fun began.
