16 March 2013

Two days ago in singing class, Mr. Andrews let us loose. He had to go work on some things having to do with the musical, so he allowed us to do whatever we wanted.

I had brought a present my brother had gotten me to school, to use to work out with my friends later.

So, knowing I had nothing else to do, I asked Jenny if she wanted to see something cool.

My little music toy, as I call it, is the coolest present I have ever gotten. One end you hook into an iPod or iPhone or music-playing device with a headphone jack, and the other end, a sticky end, you stick to anything. A box, a chair, a cup, a bowl. And then, when you play the music, the object you've stuck my toy on immediately becomes a speaker.

"Anyone got a cup?" I asked the other singers. One of them tossed a plastic cup found in a cupboard to me. I got it ready, and then played a song with particularly good bass.

WHOOSH.

"That is SO COOL," Jason plopped down next to me, grinning at me and touching the cup. "Oh my gosh...do you...do you wanna hear some music?"

I looked at him with surprise, and smiled. "Uh, sure."

He unhooked my phone from the newly created cup-speaker, and hooked his own iPhone up. Then, he started playing electronic music.

"Oh," I chuckled. "You're one of those people. That like that kind of music."

I would know, because I am one of them myself.

He frowned defensively. "Yeah. I am 'one of those people'."

"Well, so am I," I grinned. "My brother makes it."

"*I* make it!" Jason cried.

I looked at him. "Really?"

"Here," he said suddenly. "We need a better speaker than a cup...let's..."

His eyes landed on the drum set. "Ooooh."

Beckoning me to follow him, he went over to the snare drum and stuck my toy in the middle. Immediately, the best sound was created.

"Oh, yessss," he whispered. "That's nice."

Then, he looked up at me. "Alright, I'm gonna play you the best music you've ever heard. You ready?"

I laughed. "I'm ready."

For the next half an hour, Jason would play a song, dancing enthusiastically, waving his hands, nodding his head, and then look over at me.

"You like this?" He'd ask hopefully.

And I'd nod. "I do."

Then, I got three texts, and looked down.

"Em

I'm out of Chem

In outside your doors"

I stared at Paul's texts, and then looked at Jason, who was nodding his head and swinging his hips to the beat of the song, mouthing the words, his face lit up with ecstasy.

"Come in," I texted Paul. "We're not doing anything."

Then, the door opened, and a timid, shy Paul poked his head into the room.

My heart jumped. "Hey!"

He spied me, and smiled, walking in tentatively.

Tom, who had been watching my interactions with Jason, immediately turned his back on Paul and went to the farthest spot possible away from him.

"Hey," he said. "Uh...what's--"

"Emily, I'm gonna play you this song next," Jason said loudly, completely ignoring Paul. "Here, come over here."

I looked at him, and then looked back at Paul.

Paul frowned.

"Uh, hang on a second, Jason," I said.

I snatched my music toy up and grabbed the cup.

"Hey, Paul," I smiled at him. "Wanna see how this works?"

He nodded eagerly. I hooked up my phone and stuck the other side to the cup.

His eyes widened as the music played from the plastic vessel.

"Try another thing...try the chair," he suggested.

I did.

"That's so cool," he whispered.

Then, I took the sticky side and laid it on his cheek, holding it there.

His blue eyes looked up at me, and we both giggled stupidly.

"Emily, come listen to this," Jason said. "It'll blow your mind."

And Paul frowned.
