The wind softly sings its quiet tune to the loud, messy world that I occupy. The thin red grass by the cliff's edge sways. A giant shape eclipses the green-tinted sunset. Ten, fifteen metres away, a young rabbit darts from its hiding place. The booms from the east scare most of this island's wildlife. It used to scare me, too. Not any more.
I turn back to the eastern sky. It is alternately stormy black and lit up with purple lightning. The livid volcano beneath spews liquid fire from an obscured crater. Near the base of the mountain, an island is already evolving from the steaming hot lava. Someday, my people will populate that small speck. In time, but not yet.
This sliver of land is perfect to view the new world forming. I take a snap with my camera. It won't capture the atmosphere of the event, but it'll be a good memento of the night. The distant inferno to my left; an impressive green sunset to my right. And me, alone, trapped between them on this tiny island that I am proud to call mine...
