"Are you happy?" came the question from his therapist. "Is anyone happy?" was the reply he gave. "You didn't answer the question" "It was a stupid question" "Why was it stupid?" "I wouldn't be here talking to you if I was happy" "You don't think I talk to happy people?" "Do you?" the disbelief in his voice directed at the incredulous idea. "Well, not really. Maybe once in-" "So then, it was a stupid question" He answered with a smirk. He looked away from his victory to the open plains. The clouds seemed more grey than usual. The fog had grown thicker and he had a feeling it was matching his mood. The silence stretched between them as Doc considered a new approach. - "What would make you happy?" his therapist continued. "Being anywhere than here with you" "Where would you be?" "On an island. With my books and no connections to the world" His therapist gave a low ironic chuckle and leaned forward. "No family, no friends?" "Nope. I don't fucking need them. I have myself" "You'd miss someone though wouldn't you?" his therapist softly said. "Don't you dare speak her name!" his voice bellowed out to the open space. "Why not? She happened, she was a part of your life" "She's not anymore. So why dwell on it?!" he threw back, his heart broken again at the memory of her. "Because until you acknowledge the impact of her, we'll never get you out of here" came the smooth reply from his doctor. - "I'll be back tomorrow Ethan" "Looking forward to it Doc" the familial reply came natural to his mouth.
Ethan stood there and watched the flash of light to signal the Doc's departure. He pulled a photograph from his pocket and softly stroked the image. Her eyes were wide and a deep blue, the smile on her pink lips seemed to jump off the page and into his heart. He stared at her until a tear dropped on the photo. He sniffed, roughly wiping his eyes before putting her photo back in his pocket. He kicked the ground with his boots before he sat down. He knew the Doc was right, he was stuck here till he could move on. But he didn't know how. He wished he knew the way out, how to wake up from this 'nothing'.
Because no matter what Doc said, he knew she was still out there. She was still alive.
He just had to find her.
