This is how is see the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness is controlled by external things, e.g if that person that you've liked for ages FINALLY asks you out then that makes you happy, if they ask out someone else then that will probably make you unhappy. If the sun is shining and you find some money that would make you happy, if you get drenched in the rain and lose some money that would make you unhappy... But joy comes from within it is not and should not be effected by the external. Joy is about knowing this life is not perfect but choosing to look beyond the imperfections and enjoy it anyway. When you have true joy inside you nothing and no one can take it away unless YOU let it/them... And when you do understand and have true joy a peace comes along with it too.
