A poster of my youthful days.
Caused me often to wonder
in a quizzical haze.

What could this silly collection of nonsense mean?
To shy to ask, lest my ignorance be seen.

A poster upon my parents wall
Mocking and confusing me...
since three feet tall.

Can, I'd often chant it to myself.
Yet the meaning remained hidden,
causing me to worry
that brains weren't my wealth.

Can, I'm such a stupid lout!

I grew into adulthood.
On future bright I did muse.
Yet on the meaning of this poster,
I remained confused.

Then one day,
out of the blue,
like a bolt it struck me.
The meaning,
suddenly clear,
my confusion taken from me.

I gave a big guffaw and chortled to the sky!
CHICANO CAN!
Then why oh why couldn't I?

Post script: for those of you that aren't familiar with the term, Chicano is a self identifying term for Mexican Americans born from their political and militant movement in the 1960's and '70's. My parents once hosted a "Brown Beret" meeting. and I never had grapes as a kid to demonstrate our families solidarity with the farm workers plight
