This is a true story about when I volunteered and provided respite for families.

Cerebral palsy, wheelchair bound
Dyskinetic, uncontrolled. My movements tightly wound.
I may not be able to express all the feelings I have inside.
My tongue and teeth, you see, so often will collide.
But I think and reason at full capacity
Which makes it that much harder when you can't understand me.
But you've come to help for the day, lend your time, what can I say?
We'll get through this feeding together.
Oh no! There goes the tray!
I know it was hard to do, but you were patient, we made it through.
I appreciate your efforts and to let you know is a task I feel I must pursue.
There are two important words that mean quite a lot.
I wish they were easy to say. To get them out will take all I've got.
My tongue will hitch and trip the whole way through
It will be hard, difficult to do.
But hang in there with me again,
until I can say....
Thank you.
* this gentle soul worked so hard to simply say thank you. We were both so happy when I finally got it!
