Identity Crisis

It's been a bit of a strange fortnight.
I quit my job and I finish at the end of the month.

I know most people would think that's crazy at a time when so many people are losing their jobs thanks to the economic mess we are in. And maybe it is.

I only know that the longer I stay there, the more my mental health will suffer and it is long past time to go.

So who am I now? I have done the same job for the past 21 years and trained to do it for 3 years before.

That's a sizeable portion of my life! I've learned to define myself by my job. I suddenly feel as if I'm floundering for a name.

So it is time to think about who I am in a different way.

What do I actually do? Well first of all I'm a mum and a wife but they don't really define me except as who I am to other people.

I am so many things I don't know how to choose one and say 'that's me'.

I'm a bad knitter, a mediocre cook, a reluctant taxi driver, an optimistic gardener...

I am a writer.

@crabbyknickers

I enjoy reading modern fantasy, sci fi, high fantasy and thrillers as much as I enjoy writing them. I have just quit my normal job and hope to spend much more time writing.

You will be fine, good for you sweetheart

I was in a similar situation 6 weeks ago. Since leaving sixth form I had been in recruitment, and worked up to being a recruitment consultant, but the company were awful and treated me awfully. I left without having sourced another position to go to but it was like a weight had lifted from my shoulders - I started laughing really hard again and enjoyed simple things that I was missing everyday (hugs with my fiancée, our new house we'd just moved in to, my family). I ha a couple of weeks just for me, to re-couperate. Then I picked myself up, dusted myself down and am now with a company that is great, treats me well and I am really happy. I hope your story ends similar, I think it will do. You had the admirable bravery to leave somewhere that was making you miserable, you have the bravery to go get what makes you happy. Take the time you won't be at work to rediscover yourself. I wish you all the best m'love :) x
