That 2 Percent

We say the genetic difference between a human and a chimp is about 2%. We look at the chimp and remark that, if intelligence is based on what we already know and what we can do, and a chimp can read sign language and have enough dexterity to crack a nut shell with a rock, we'd say we rank much higher than the chimp based on intelligence. Chimps can not build computers and send their own into space. Yet there's only 2% in it! On one side of a room you have a chimp, and the other a human being. 2% DNA difference. And of course we would say we are the most intelligent species on the planet. Just look at what we can do. In fact, we're so clever, we're reaching out into the cosmos looking for any signs of life elsewhere out there. But here's the interesting thought that revolves around that all important 2%. Who's to say there isn't a species of life elsewhere, with a DNA difference of 2% ABOVE US? Think about that... To them we'd be a chimp! Imagine what they know and can do with their intelligence... This iPhone I am typing on would be a piece of slate to them. What we can do as adults, they can do as children. What does this all mean? It means that if we all realised our place not on earth, but in the universe, we'd have a better understanding of ourselves, and respect for EVERYTHING. We should not act so smug and selfish as we do, and believe ourselves to be the pinnacles of perfection. Besides, when was the last time you saw a chimp start a war?

I confess life gets me wound up a lot... I am using this as an experiment to see whether my thoughts are my own, and if this helps me make sense of the world... Probably not!
