Chapter 1
Kelly Green emptied the bag of shavings into the stall and spread them about, making the bed as neat as possible for Whisper, her 13hh bay Welsh pony. Kelly had owner Whisper since she was 6, and being 14 now, Whisper was becoming very small, Kelly's legs almost touching the floor. Although she was aloud to get another horse, it would mean selling her beloved Whisper.
"Come on Kelly!" Rosie Seek groaned, bursting the stable door open.
"I'm coming!" Kelly grinned, "I just need to fill Whisp's water bucket and then we can go!"
"Ok, I'll grab the ponies in while you finish up." Rosie announced, walking out the door and grabbing Whisper's head collar.
Kelly sighed, grabbing the hose and filling the neon pink water bucket up.
Kelly fastened the girth and pulled on her riding hat. She quickly vaulted into the saddle and trotted out of the gate after the 14.1hh dun Connemara, Felice, and her rider Rosie.
After a few minutes they came upon a hidden bridle path, one Kelly and Rosie had galloped down many times! Whisper pricked her ears and bounded into a canter, getting faster by the stride. As they approached the bridge, a gust of wind swirled around the two horses. The bridge creaked and swayed before giving away and hurtling into the rocks below, both horses still on board.
The grey pony galloped across a stubble field, destined to find home. Riderless and reins dangling, the horse bewilderedly bolted on, terrified of the memories he had left behind..
Kelly's eyes fluttered open, memories swirling around her head. All she could remember was the piercing neigh of her horse and sound of the bridge hurtling into the rocks. Kelly searched frantically for her friend, scanning the wreckage of the bridge. There lying by a wood plank was a body. A dead body. Kelly panicked.
"Kelly?!" A voice rang out, faint and distraught. "Kelly are you ok?"
"Rosie?" Kelly whispered, turning around. It was Rosie, safe and sound with not a scratch on her, only her heart was broken, Felice was dead.
"We have to find Whisper!" Rosie cried, tears springing to her eyes.
"What about..."
"No!" Rosie cried, "There's nothing we can do now, we have to get home and find Whisper!" Rosie said, as confidently as she could. Kelly nodded, staggering to her feet. She tripped over and found herself rushing up to meet the rocks, everything turning black...
A bright light shone in Kelly's eyes, blinding her for a few moments. Kelly heard the shouting but she found herself drifting off again, loosing consciousness and blacking out.
"Is she ok?" Rosie trembled, sticking like glue to Kelly's bedside, her hands clutched to the soft cotton duvet, eyes focused purely on the solemn figure laying lifelessly on the bed.
"She'll be fine, she's just drowsy after the pills." Mrs Green reassured Rosie, patting her shoulder and leaving the room. Rosie sighed, walking over to the window and pulling back the curtains sending bright beams of sunlight into the room.
Kelly's eyes slowly opened, adjusting to the sudden burst of light.
"Omg Kelly!" Rosie squealed in delight, throwing her self on the small space next to Kelly. Kelly's heart skipped a beat, memories flooding back from the night before. "Where's Whisper?!" Kelly shrieked, sitting bolt up right and clutching Rosie's hand.
"Um well...the thing is..."
Kelly's heart sunk, tears streamed down her face and she lay back down on the bed.
"No no!" Rosie cried, suddenly realising what Kelly thought she had meant. "We just can't find her, thats all!"
"That's all?!" Kelly snapped. "That is NOT all! My horse could have a broken leg, a chill, strangles or be starving to death!" She fumed, getting out of bed and pulling her jodhpurs on.
"Where are you going?!" Rosie exclaimed, watching Kelly as she frantically got dressed.
"Where do you think?! I'm going to get my horse!"
