~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I back away, my chain rustling and making a jingling sound and I bump into Sargent. "What the heck are you doing, girl?" he yells, furious.
"Sh-she's..." I stutter. "D-d-dead," I say frightfully. I'm shocked. Charity had died in my arms. I feel responsible and sink down to the ground, a lump forming in my throat. I don't know what to do. Sargent isn't doing anything, just standing there, dumbstruck. Someone crawls by me, and Zay gives reassuring words. They don't help. I finally fall back onto the snow, staring up into unending blackness. Soon I drift into a light sleep, unaware of anything around me. Shocked and broken hearted.
"Gemi. Gemi? Don't tell me your dead. Come on. Wake up," Zay's voice fills my dreams and I sit up suddenly, feeling like I'm falling into the ground. I slam into something and it turns out it's Zay's head. "Oh! My nose! Seriously Gemi?" This only reminds me of Charity's nose bleed from when she was alive. I choke down a sob, and Zay moves closer. "Gemi-"
"Where is she? Is she dead? Tell me!" I ask, cutting him off. He says she's somewhere better, but that only makes me cry harder. "You...don't...get it...do you?" I gasp, my breaths rasping and my voice shaking. "She...was..."
Zay laughs. My jaw tightens and I punch him, but miss. I keep punching and finally land one on what feels like his stomach. Zay grunts and wheezes. I don't regret it and turn away. The wind howls and snow swirls around me, whipping my hair in my face. I bury my head in my arms, blocking the biting snow. It seems like hours and Zay is still wheezing and moaning. I finally have some sympathy and turn back. "Zay? What's wrong?" "Ooohhhh...nothing. You just...punched me...in the...stomach." On "stomach", he lets out a big sigh. "Charity is alive...with the guards and...the other Illegals. She had frostbite... and minor hy...pother...mia," he says. He's finally gaining his breath. "What do you mean with the other Illegals? Aren't they here with-" "That's what I was going...to tell you. They were...going to leave...you all alone...but I...stayed." Reality hit me hard. They had all left us. Probably never to return. I suddenly feel sorry for socking him in the stomach. I grope for his arm and finally find it. I move my hands upward and find his torso. I pick him up and grunt. He's heavy and I'm not sure if I can go on long enough without dropping him. I trudge into the blizzard probably going in circles. My eyes sting and I close them, directing my head into the wind.
It seems hours later and I'm still going when my feet touch sharp rocks and sand. I'd taken my shoes off miles ago and put them on Zay's feet. He still is curled up, holding his stomach and breathing deeply. The wind hasn't died down, and I fight against it. I trip on a rock and go sprawling, Zay tumbling down onto the sand below my feet. I fall backwards and hit the back of my head on a rock. I force myself up and crawl forward, finally touching Zay's arm. I grab it and start dragging him across the sand. My head ducked, a gush runs over my hair and into my mouth, filling it with the metallic, pungent taste of my own blood. Somehow, I make it under a boulder, sheltering us from the unrelenting snow. I force Zay to what I think is the back of the boulder. My hands go to my head, but fall forward, slick with blood. The last thing I remember is the wind gusting into the makeshift cave, hitting my face and cooling the warm blood.
Zay and I are goners. We are all alone, lost, and freezing. We are going to die in the hostile Wild.
