It was about an hour later that Dr Harris called.
"So how can we help?"
Eve began to go though what had been happening and what her symptoms were. He asked a few questions and said it sounded a bit like tonsillitis.
" Your obviously not able to come into the surgery. I'm doing house calls from five o clock onwards. So I should get to you around six if that's ok?"
" Oh that would be great" the relief could be heard in her voice.
She called Alex immediately afterwards, and explained what was happening.
"Ok, good. I'm just about to go and get Josh so I'll come straight home after that. Do you need anything?"
A mental list of body parts came to my, but this wasn't the time for jokes.
Josh came hurtling up the stairs shouting " Mummy mummy guess what?"
She could barely lift her head to see him. In the last hour she gradually , felt weaker and weaker. The pain in her chest from coughing was too much. The pain in her neck meant she couldn't get comfortable at all on the bed. Her head felt as if someone was drilling from the inside out.
She managed a " Oh hello, what is it Josh, what's happened?"
Josh still a little oblivious to his mummies incapacity said " I got star of the week!"
" Wow, that's great, sunshine". She truly was amazed as he was always a little too spirited at school. So this made her smile despite her self pity.
"Are you feeling better? When can you play with me?"
She struggled to hold back the tears.
" Soon, darling. The doctor is coming to see me to make me better. So you'll have to be really quiet when he gets here. Can you do that?" she whispered.
All the while, Alex was carefully watching from the door. He could see his wife, hear her, but something was gone. She looked gaunt like a ghost. The image was shocking. He had barely noticed the deterioration, but it was clear now even in the dark. And for once he was worried.
