It's Good To............watch Television

I like television, who doesn't? Anyone who moans about it should maybe ask why they have the all singing, all dancing latest flat screen hanging on their wall, or in the corner; and the sat dish on the house. The greatest element of a TV is the off switch; we have a choice don't we, to switch off or turn over if any programme is not to our liking.

But..... It's not like it used to be. Yep I'm old enough to remember 3 channels , yes three! Also how exciting it was when Channel 4 was launched.
When I was wee, we watched Saturday morning telly, a bit of telly before the t time news, (willow the wisp my favourite) and school holidays was ...wait for it ... Why Don't you? Then you went out... yes... outside... to play with your mates or worse still on your own in the garden. Imagine that?
Not having a whole Sky package dedicated to music or children. I don't know I managed.

Also, when we had visitors the television got switched off. I still insist on this, but the number of houses I go to where it is left on is incredible; no wonder the art of conversation is in decline. No wonder with the constant drone of drivel in the background children need help from speech and language therapists (not in all cases though).

We only had one television, so Saturday nights " the family" all sat TOGETHER and watched family friendly programmes. There was no telly in your bedroom, so you couldn't disappear and sulk. Parents knew exactly what the children were watching. Not like today, I know of kids as young as 3, who have a telly in their room and watch it before going to bed. Mmmm what happened to bed time stories; what happened to wind down time; that special time with mum or dad. No wonder so many kids are hard wired. That's my view and some may not like it.

What happened to the watershed? It's still 9 o'clock isn't it? Well why do I see adverts for adult programmes before this; why do I hear inappropriate language in supposedly family friendly TV, Harry Hill is one example. My son loves music, but I can't let him watch music videos, in my opinion there's just too much adult content, nudity, sexual innuendo, never mind the lyrics!!
So... as I said at the start, I have a choice, and that is to switch off and monitor all that he watches in his telly time, and I do.

But... also, television has provided us with some classics over the years, drama, crime, genuine reporting of great news events, wonderful educational programmes and documentaries that bring to life a world that a book could not.

I like TV, I don't watch it much, but its like a friend in the corner, you can call upon to brighten up your day.

@HeatherAnne @MelchiorJ13. Sorry if its a bit of a rant, could have gone on and on. 😊

I love it! Especially the whole 'what happened to bed time stories' ... I feel inspired actually, by that line... πŸ˜ŠπŸ’™πŸ‘

True what u said especially about children. I had tv in my room as a child but at this is why I DIDNOT put tv in the kids room so we can actually see eachother πŸ˜”

Agree with everything you said. I don't have a TV license, so I only use my TV for watching movies or Netflix etc. Its amazing how much time I've gained - time I obviously used to waste watching things I wasn't really interested in. Now the TV only goes on when I'm going to watch something specific!

Spot on πŸ‘ one TV in our house, and most viewing is via whatever we recorded with sky+.. Plenty of entertaining and informative content available although we sometimes use the TV to listen to the radio πŸ˜³πŸ˜‚ whatever happened to the banana bunch?!

@Burrfoot I love my telly. There, I've said it. Although I do agree with all the other points. Tell you what I don't miss getting up and walking the length of the room to change channel ... πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ‘β€β˜•

@eddie12309 well said!πŸ‘

I remember the launch of Channel 4 too, and Willow The Wisp! We must be very similar in age... I have a friend (more an aquaintence) who had The OC on for 2 hours when I took my son to play there with her daughter a few years ago - so depressing and inappropriate!! (and actually, boring) - people def need to chat more in my opinion! We only have 1 tv here, in the lounge (plus a DVD playing one only in the conservatory, just for the kids to watch the odd thing now and again). As for bedtime, my boys both have their bath and quiet time (drawing or quiet play like Lego) every night, then a bedtime story or two - so much for that with my eldest!! But we won't give up... As for the 'watershed', what's that?! I heard some pretty rude words in a song on the RADIO a couple of days ago and nothing was said - didn't expect it from BBC Radio! But you're right, tv at it's best (and esp. British Drama), is fantastic - I just wish there was more of that and Nature / Science shows to replace all the 'reality' and 'celebrity' dross!!

@HeatherAnne glad you liked. Bedtime stories are a must for soooo many reasons. πŸ’š

@sarahgamal yes no tellies in bedrooms! πŸ‘πŸ’š

@Irrational_Kimmi yep I have to sky+ the programmes I watch otherwise its not on. But your right people water time watching telly then moan they don't have time to do anything. πŸ‘πŸ˜˜

@Burrfoot I'm sure there on you tube somewhereπŸ˜‚

@leelee101 too right. Remote controls! How many have you lost though? πŸ˜‚

@MrsS I'm not sure if I just notice it more since having children but I'm always moaning about the watershed on a Saturday night as that's our TV night. GrrrrπŸ‘πŸ˜˜

I'm supposed to be working from home, poorly bubba. Better get on. 😘😘

@eddie12309 None. My OCD keeps them where I can see 'em hun πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

Agree with everything you've said this is exactly how we were brought up and I will be the same with my kids πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Great blog, I remember reading something about how tv's are interfering with child development... I grow up with old fashioned parents so I've never really been as glued to the tv as my younger cousins but that said you've got a point. There is that choice to switch it off when you don't agree with the content or when you just don't want to watch it. My favourite channel are the discovery channels and its all I miss on sky.

@sjw its my bug bear. Especially baby TV. Wtf!

@pthasse yes TV has some great programmes and we tend to watch a lot of discovery. But it's completely understandable why it interferes with development. I didn't let my son watch it under he was 2. Thanks for reading. πŸ‘πŸ˜˜

Mine too my dad calls the tv babysitters there's a lot of truth in that..how's your little one? πŸ’—

@sjw she's had temperature since yesterday and is sleeping lots, been enjoying lots of cuddles and book time today. πŸ˜”

Awww poor bubba hope she's better soon πŸ’—πŸ’πŸ’—

I'm sure it's already been said but that's my childhood :)

@pad1 ah that's ok then. πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘ thanks for reading. 😊
