My first ever Opuss (I started with stories)

On a cold rainy night in Hertfordshire heavily pregnant 'Carol Frost' climbed off her red leather sofa and waddled over to answer the door "Who could that be" she mused. It certainly wasn't to late for visitors at nine o'clock "Probably next door, wanting some sugar or milk" she thought. But as she approached the door she could see through the frosted glass that is was unmistakably her husband. "What's he doing home so early, and where's his key" she thought to herself as she slid the chain across and opened the door. "What you doing home it's only nine o'clock?. You made me get out my chair"she said in mock anger, as Stewart walked through the front door. "Sorry love, there's not a lot to do at work at the moment until that contracts signed, and seeing as I'm the boss, I thought I'd have an early one and come home and get you out your chair" He joked, as he walked into the front room turned the television on to sky sports one and sat down in Carols seat.

Stewart runs a small business selling office supplies to corporate clients and has been working hard of late to secure a new contract. While times have certainly been tough in the past. If this new contract gets signed they can, as Stewart would often put it," Live on easy street" and he could take a back seat in the business and spend some quality time with his wife and new son or daughter to be.

"I'd love a cuppa princess" Stewart shouted out over the match commentary on the television. "Princess, he hasn't called me that since we started dating" Carol thought. As she was putting the kettle on Stewart came over and put his arms around her waist and placed his hands on her baby bump. "Fancy an early night?". Carol nudged Stewart with her elbow "That's how I got in this situation in the first place" she said with a laugh. "Well you can't get pregnant twice can you" Stewart joked back, "Seriously thou babe I am a bit tired lets take the tea upstairs to bed." "I thought you looked a bit peaky, ok but no funny business" Carol said as she led Stewart upstairs by the hand. Stewart undressed and got in bed with Carol and placed his arms around her waist with his hands on her bump and fell almost immediately to sleep, with Carol dozing off not far behind him.

Carol woke with a jump at the sound of banging on the front door. She looked at her bedside alarm clock which told her it was three am " Who the bloody hells that?". She struggled out of bed and peaked out the bedroom window to see a police car at the end of her drive and two uniformed officers in fluorescent yellow standing on her doorstep.

"Stewart, STEWART" she shouted "It's the police at the door". Stewart was a notorious deep sleeper. When they were first dating, he once fell asleep against a speaker in a nightclub and a bouncer had to embarrassingly wake him up at the end of the night. She tried nudging him awake, but all she got out of him was an incoherent mumble followed by, what sounded like "Goodbye princess". Carol realized she wasn't going to wake the slumbering giant, so she slowly went to answer the door, thinking to herself that one of the neighbour's has probably been burgled or that someones car had been stolen, "The car" she realized as she was halfway down the stairs "It wasn't on the drive, bloody hell the cars been nicked" she thought as she descended the stairs " hold on officers I'm coming" when she slid the bolt across and opened the door she could tell straight away that something was seriously wrong.

The male policeman looked as white as a sheet and the young female policewomen with her hat tucked under her arm looked like she was about to start crying at any minute. "Mrs Frost I'm, I'm afraid I've got some very bad news for you" he stuttered "It's your husband, he, he was involved in a fatal car crash on the A10 a few hours ago, I'm really". Carol cut him off. "No I'm sorry officer your mistaken, my husband is upstairs asleep" but something was nagging away in the back of her mind "He never had his keys" "Goodnight princess".

The female police officer who had been holding it in as best she could started to cry, despite how unprofessional it looked and went to hold Carol, but Carol pushed her away and ran upstairs, as best she could in her condition, and ran straight into the bedroom 'Empty' "This can't be happening, this can't be happening" she said out loud as she checked the bathroom, also 'Empty'. "Mrs Frost" the young policewomen was coming up the stairs "Are you ok up here" "He came home to say goodbye to me". Carol sobbed, "He said goodbye in sleep"..........
