Part 1
The day started out like any other day, and Kate was taking a walk around her neighborhood. Out of all the options for getting exercise that were open to her, she liked walking the best. One moment she was striding along, absorbed in her thoughts. The next, she was plunging down into a black hole. Bright lights flashed around her. She could feel electrical currents racing over her body, but strangely, it didn't hurt. After what could have been mere seconds or few hours, she couldn't tell which, she landed on her hands and knees in a thick patch of grass.
