Like so many other people, I would like to find a solution for things. As well as many other people I first try to identify what the problem is, put a name to it. What is it about us that makes us hurt each other, why are things the way they are?.
I thought of fear and the number of things that we do and don't do because of it. Procrastination, self sabotage. I believe and also that most people would agree with me, that most people is somewhat "good", we all also have our selfishness, fears, self sabotaging attitudes. The sum of an essential good person who wouldn't physically attack another with this fearful somewhat tired equals society who gets run over time and time again.
Why is there people in power? They do things we disapprove (at whichever grade and extent), we protest, things essentially don't change.
Recently I learned that the King of Spain has the hobby of going hunting elephants in Africa, how such atrocity can be accepted? This is only one of so many scandals from his part and a mere example of the millions that people in power bring us. This man is still the King of Spain and will remain that way, this won't be more than a bunch of comic strips, a rant here and there, snappy comments on Facebook and Twitter and that's pretty much it. Nothing will essentially change. I guess that it is very likely that he will still keep going hunting elephants anyway.
We treat animals like objects, we own them, we kill them (maybe not me personally but humans as race do). I personally kill spiders and wasps, out of fear I guess and only if they are in my house, it is obviously not a hobby and I don't spend my time going around the world looking to kill insects. I am aware however of its immorality but given the circumstances...
I believe we consider that whoever kills a person in the same way I can kill a spider has some level of insanity. Then we create a ladder of empathy in which allocate other species depending on how close they are to us. Perhaps gorillas are the closest? Pets and mammals in general seem to get a high step on our empathy ladder. I don't know where would we place elephants, but certainly if someone is capable of shooting an elephant in the head from just a few steps away, proudly pose next to its cadaver for a photograph. Well, psychologically speaking, that can't be right. There is a concerning level of sadism in these actions.
I leave this here for now. Thoughts?
