One night Amie snuck out after bedtime to watch the pretty night sky. She tiptoed down the stairs as quietly as possible. Her heart clenched when a loud creak escaped beneath her tiny feet. Amies mother did not hear this so Amie continued down the stairs and out the front door.

Outside the light blue colour of the sky was still fading into black. Her moon was as bright as ever. It shone just for her and her mother, she thought. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the silhouette under the tree. She knew that turning around would be best. But out of sheer curiosity she walked towards the tree despite the fear she felt.

As Amie came closer she saw who it was. She smiled for herself. It was only her mother of course. They looked at eachother in astonishment. None of them knew what the other was doing outside. Amie couldn't understand so she asked "Mother, what are you doing here by yourself"? She got no answer. After a while her mother said "Amie, do you remember when you told me you wanted to go to the moon with me"? "Yes" she answered quietly. Mother continued "I'm going there soon. At first I'll be there by myself but eventually we can be there toghether. We can watch the very spot we're on now from the moon". Amie did not quite understand what her mother ment that day. She only saw the tears hidden behind the smile.

The next day she woke up just like every other day. Little did she know that this day wouldn't be ordinary at all. Her clothes were still on. But how? Her mother always tucked her in it night. Could she have forgotten? Amie ran down the stairs so fast she almost fell. As she came stumbling into the kitchen her heart stopped. It was her mother. She was laying on the floor, pale and lifeless. Amie stood paralyzed by emptiness. A five year old may not know much. But this five year old knew. Her mother was somewhere else.

Days passed and turned into weeks. Amie was taken to a orphanage. She did not speak to anyone. She barely ate. The only thing she did do was watch the sky at night from the bedroom window. Her heart stopped that morning. And it never continued to beat the same way. Never again with the pure beats of an innocent child.

She went to the funeral a few weeks after that day. Only tree people came. It didn't matter to Amie. Her mother was only hers anyway. She sat there, on a rock hard bench by herself and listened to the priest as he said all the things that priests say. She was never really listening though. Her mother wasn't even there.

After the burial she sat by the grave for a while. But only until no one was watching her. When she had the chance she ran as fast as she could towards her old town. She ran and ran and ran. After a while she got so tired she had to stop. Without food in the stomach one cannot run very far. Especially when it comes to a child. She continued as it was getting darker. Strength she gained from the power of will.

She finally reached her old house after what felt like hours of struggling. The sky was now in complete darkness. Except for, of course, the moon. Amie gazed for a long time before she tore her gaze and started to walk towards their tree.

She's watching me now, Amie thought. With the tears running slowly along her soft cheeks, she started to whisper into the night "I miss you. I don't like anyone but you. Please come and get me. I don't want to be alone anymore. They wont let me see you. But I know you're there, waiting for me. Singing to me". She heard a whisper as smooth as the gentle wind that caresses the leaves in the tree. It was a deep, soothing voice.

"Sleep now my dearest love. What I treasure most is you. Dream of a pretty white dove. Soaring in the sky so blue. Don't fear the silent night. You're protected by the moonlight. Into sleep you now must row. Close your eyes. And remember. I love you so".
