She sat in front of the riverbed, fearing the frigid waters to much to come any closer, but entranced by the dazzling glow of the stars reflecting off it's grey-green surface. She reached out to skim the river with her fingertips, wanting more than anything to feel its glossy coolness flowing around her nails in miniature typhoons. But then she pulled her hand back as if she had been struck. She stumbled back from the side of the river, sides heaving, and sweat beginning to drip off her brow. She heard her mother screaming, again and again, "DONT GO NEAR THE RIVER, youNAIEVE LITTLE GIRL! Do you not remember what HAPPENED TO YOUR SISTER? You're GOING TO END UP JUST LIKE HER, LOST AND DEAD IN THE FREEZING COLD!!!" Katherine remembered the hand flying out and striking her face, turning it a faded red.

Katherine's mother had mental problems. Nonetheless, her daughter had drowned in that river, five years ago. Katherine was sure that was what had finally put her over.

She looked over the frothing waters, steeling herself to leave, and never come back here. And she saw something incredible.

Her sister, swimming in the river, laughing like everything was normal. Her red hair was as curly as ever, and her clothes were dry.

Katherine noticed that when the water hit her, it didn't part. "Katherine!" called the wraith, it's eyes turning the same sickly color of the river. It's voice began to split. "Katy, come swim with me." It beckoned to her with an arm covered in fish scales. Katherine's shrill scream split the night air like a hammer taken to a stained glass window. The wraith was changing, slowly shimmering, and sliding, becoming dozens of silvery minnows.

Katherine never went back.
