Chapter 11:
Jasmine and I were getting all dolled up for the Christmas party. The days seemed to fly by recently and I knew my exam day was fast approaching but tried not to think about it too much. I knew that inviting Jas would get me in a good mood and excited for the night ahead. She already knew that I was bubbling about a certain person coming and made sure I looked all dolled up.
I wore a red skater dress with a thin sparkly belt around my waste. It was freezing outside so needed to wear tights and a jacket and my favourite part of the outfit were my shoes. My mum had bought them for me as an early Christmas present and I was in love with them. They were taupey coloured brogues with a high heel and tassled laces. I felt ready for a fun night out with my friends and couldn't wait for Jasmine to see the place from the inside. She was my best friend and I loved her so much, more than I would love my sister and we were inseparable. She was halfway through doing my hair and she always amazed me with the new styles she came up with. Today she had straightened my it and parted it down the middle. She then began to do two French braids at the front and although it was simple I loved it. When I looked in the mirror I was so surprised to see the length of my hair; when I was little my hair always hung just above my bottom and one year I had it cut and cried for weeks. Since then I can just about manage with a trim and I was so glad that was all I did as it looked so beautiful in the mirror as it brushes against my hips.
Jasmine looked so stunning when she came out of the bathroom after getting changed. She wore a navy fitted dress with vintage roses and flowers all around it and at the back it opened slightly but had a cute bow above the opening. I had always envied her perfect figure as she was tall and slim, but perfectly balanced out. I on the other hand was shorter and slightly curvier, but I had passed the phase of constantly worrying about weight and all that silliness. This was me and I was grateful to be living a happy life and sharing it with people I loved. That was all that mattered.
We left the house linking arms and giggling away and Jas carried the Champagne we had bought in the morning.
When we arrived at the store the place was buzzing with tinsel and fairy lights and all those happy Christmas songs that made everyone feel festive. Jasmine's boyfriend, Sam greeted us later on as he had just come from work and they always looked so happy to see each other. They had been together for a few years and I imagined them getting married in years to come and Jas hopefully wearing one of my gowns.
Of course Cindy and Maggie welcomed the two with open arms and were happy to be spreading the Christmas spirit. I could tell Cindy had already had a little too much to drink, but why not! I was happy to see her let her hair down and have fun.
About an hour into the party the tiny bell rang out from the door and the person I had been waiting for had arrived. Jasmine knew straight away it was him and nudged me to tell me to go and speak to him.
I slowly walked over feeling my tummy knot inside. "Sophia! Hi, how are you?" "hi Matt, I'm great thanks! having fun!" We kissed each others cheeks and Matt stepped back and looked at me from a distance, "wow you look so beautiful Soph, I love your dress!" "ah thank you! You don't look too bad yourself." We exchanged cheeky grins and I was slightly too happy that he had already given me a nickname. "oh and Matt this is my best friend Jasmine and her boyfriend, Sam." "hi guys, nice to meet you, the place looks amazing!" "I know! Cindy and Maggie must've put a lot of work into it!" replied Jasmine giving me excited smiles every time Matt looked away. "well I better go see the hostesses! Dad couldn't make it due to business but, oh yeah he told me to thank you for the email and he would be in touch soon." "Oh ok thanks Matt." "You're welcome Soph." We just stared at each other for a few seconds and the world stood still. I began to see that Matt liked me and I started to wonder if getting into a relationship was the best thing right now, but I knew that at this point I couldn't control what was happening.
We partied the whole night long and sang Christmas carols with plenty of laughter to go round. We were all a little drunk but Maggie comforted me when she said I could stay in the spare room with Jas and Sam as she had put up some inflatable mattresses. Maggie reminded me of that fun aunty that would laugh and joke with you and not tell your parents that you went a little wild. Jas and I never really went off the rails and this was no exception, we just had fun and laughed with the people we loved and the environment was completely different to a night club or bar which really wasn't our cup of tea. We were both stable but wanted to be safe by not driving so I called mum and explained everything to her and she was happy for me to stay.
The amount of people at the party slowly decreased as the night went on and it was down to Cindy, Maggie, Jas, Sam, Matt and I. We sat around the fire drinking our tea but the love and spirit was still there.
Cindy and Maggie decided to stay too and Matt felt that he better make a move. He gave a general goodbye to everyone and thanked Cindy and Maggie for the great evening. He winked at me as he left and everyone got back to what they were doing so I thought I would walk him out. He went through the back door as this lead to the car park and stood outside for a few minutes. I grabbed a blanket and joined him. "what are you looking at?" I asked him as he gazed up at the sky. "look." As I stared up like him I saw the sky twinkle with thousands of little diamonds that had carefully been sorted in the midnight onyx sky. I continued to stare but could see that Matt's gaze had switched from the sky to me. As I looked back at him his eyes also sparkled like the stars in the sky and I knew this moment couldn't be any more magical. He slowly stepped closer to me and all I did was shut my eyes. He kissed me gently on my lips and I became weak at the knees. I knew his kiss was sincere and genuine as it stayed sweet and heartfelt and didn't turn into anything more. I wrapped my arms around his neck and eventually we parted. My night couldn't have been more special.
