Chapter 33:
The hospital bed swam quickly along the busy white corridors. I ran as fast as I could to keep up with it, along with Sam and Jasmine's mum, keeping it in sight through each turn round the corners. "Mum, I'm scared! What's happening?" Cried Jasie through weeping tears. "Don't worry sweetheart, they're going to look after you!" Replied her mother, looking at the doctors for justification. They nodded at jasmine, although something clearly wasn't right. Everything was too rushed, and I knew that they had to monitor the baby cautiously.
We arrived at a ward where only Sam and Susan were allowed to go in. Jasmine looked at me sadly as the door jammed in front of my face. My fingers slid down the window until my best friend was out if sight. There was nothing I could do but wait.
Hours passed; my mum and Matt had joined me, but she had to go home to my younger brothers, but Matt stayed with me rubbing my back soothingly. "Everything's going to be ok, you'll see. She'll be here before you know it." "I know, I'm just worried about Jasmine. She looked so frightened." I said concerned. "She would be, my love. Everything happened so quickly and on her wedding day, it was a complete shock to everybody. After all, she's not due for a couple more weeks."
We waited impatiently; Matt used the opportunity to sleep, but instead I wandered around, desperately trying to find some sort of distraction. I came across the baby room, where all the newborns slept, drawing a lump to my throat. They were so tiny and innocent, their little hands firmly clasped by their heads.
As I made my way back to Jasmine's room, matt's face automatically lit up as he saw me coming his way. "Sophia!" He shouted with excitement. "She's here!"
I ran towards the room, quickly opening the door which broke the utter silence inside. Jasmine sat on the bed in a hospital gown, her head sweaty and eye make up ruined. She smiled when she saw me, inclining at the bundle in her arm. I tip toed in my bare feet towards her and saw the tiny baby who had been wrapped up in a pink blanket, her black ringlets peeping through the sides. "Amelie, I'd like you to meet your god mummy, Sophia." She lifted her towards me and I slowly took her in my arms. Her eyes stayed tightly shut whilst I rocked her back and forth to keep her asleep. She hardly weighed a thing, but this was clearly due to her early and unexpected birth. "She's so precious, Jasie. Your mummy's a brave girl, Amelie." I whispered. Sam stood crying with tears if joy as well as Jasmine's mother, and soon the room crowded with people dying to meet the new member of the family.
The wedding dress hung lifelessly against the wall, all shrivelled from the water. My heart soared when I saw baby Amelie in the world for the first time, but Jasmine's wedding dress had seen the last of its glory, and that was sad for myself and the bride, who had lost her only wedding dress.
