A circus in England is where we begin The tale of a monkey named Jonton McJinn.
He arrived from a fairground out far in the east And was known as a talented, friendly, young beast. He was treated like royalty wherever he went, And his new owners believed he was money well spent. At first he seemed pleased and happy and bright, But his keepers soon spotted that something weren’t right.
Jonton had been trained to put on an act; “THE BEST EVER MONKEY SHOW!” and that is a fact! He could walk on tightropes and ride his own bike Plus loads more stunts that an audience likes. He’d pull poses and faces to amaze and amuse, But to perform these acts now - he simply refused. In whatever they asked of him they never got far His keepers didn’t know how to handle their Star.
They tried to bribe him with bananas and sweets With cakes and chocolate - all kinds of treats. Music was played and he got a TV And loads of toys, and a climbing tree. They even gave him a fluffy pet cat But he remained unimpressed by all of that tat. Every idea was given a go, But Jonton McJinn would not do the show!
The keepers became rather angry, and grew rather mad So they treated him poorly ‘cause they thought he was bad. They shouted “MOVE!” They shouted “COME HERE!” They shouted ‘til it hurt their ears. They beat him up with their hands and long sticks And still he refused to do his great tricks.
Soon they gave up on their dumb useless creature, And brought in another renowned Big Top feature: A horse, less gifted, than our well trained friend Who would climb up a ladder - and then would descend. The crowds thought it naff, they wanted McJinn, But he couldn’t let his mean keepers win.
So Jonton was left, bored in his cage Missing the thrill of the grand circus stage. They had started to treat him with no deal of respect; If they were going to be rude, then he was going to object. He thought, “I’d perform with talent; perform with great ease” “If only they’d feed me some nice cottage cheese.”
