Oh come on, like any amount of beer or any other alcoholic drinks is the social norm for writers across the globe no? For me it's just another way of how writers can be social in their otherwise antisocial job description (well, only some of them, I have to admit (this is a biased rant anyways)) , and as far as I'm concerned there are plenty of other ways to make yourself comfortable while writing.
