Runner - Chapter 2

He thought they were going to leave without noticing him, when suddenly it struck him. If he could smell them, their wolves would definitely be able to smell him too!
He tried holding his breath, being careful not to let his sweat drip. Runners don't smell much, but the Hunters' wolves can smell almost anything.
He slowly started moving, trying to get higher, away from the noses of the fierce animals.
As he moved, he tried to count how many there were of them. About six Hunters, three of them with wolves. He almost puked when he saw their horrifyingly disgusting white eyes. Larger than human eyes, and able to see the Golden Dust.
Golden Dust was what the Hunters were after him for. For millennia Hunters had been stealing the Runners' Golden Dust. In the beginning they had been using it to sell to magicians for huge amounts of money, but later they discovered they could use it for their machines. The horrible, horrible machines. The machines that had killed his parents and one of his sisters.
