Hey everyone! Just a little update for you!
Today I met for the first time my mrs nan who is Private John Edward Dunn's widowed wife! What an incredible lady!!
She was recently diagnosed with dementia, still lives alone (sadly, John died in the 80's) in a ward assisted flat and relatively independent but family visit her everyday.
She is 88 yrs old, very frail but bubbly and chatty! Obviously her memory is failing in the short term but long term is still there, once jogged a little.
She said to me: "I haven't met you before have I Richard"
"No, unfortunately we haven't met nan!" I replied.
And then the conversation changed.
10-15 minutes later mid way through talking about the blitz.......
Nan all excited: "Oh! You're the man that's finding out all the information about my husband during the war!!"
"Yes" I replied
Nan: "My memory has gone up the wall but I will remember more things for you, it just takes me some time! Hahaha"
Anyways....
She told me a few more little stories about Johns time as a soldier and pow prisoner (I'll talk more about them another time)
She told me how her and John met after the war, where she was working and lots of little bits and pieces.
I wanted to share this incredible moment tho that I just witnessed:
Unfortunately my mrs and this side of her family lost touch many years ago and recently sorted out some issues and talking again, so, nan had never met my daughters until approx 2 weeks ago.....
Whilst, nan and me were talking about John in the kitchen my youngest daughter of 9 came walking in, nan immediately stopped talking, her face lit up and she said the following to my daughter, her great granddaughter (remember she has dementia):
Nan: "Your name is Aimee isn't it?" Aimee: "Yes nan!" Nan: "Aimee, can I have a kiss and a cuddle please?" Aimee: "Yes, of course nan!"
Put a huge lump in my throat and a tear in my eye that did, I can tell you!!
Btw almost 80yrs between Aimee and nan!!
