As I approach Helen's house, I glance at the faded roof. When we were 6, a hurricane came blazing through our little town. It didn't do much damage. The most damage it did was to Helen's house. Their house got flooded and part if the roof broke so Helen's dad had to fix it but he never replaced the faded tiles. I dismount my bike and park it next to Helen's mail box. I walk over to the door bell and ring the bronze and silver deluxe bell. Now, most houses a doorbell makes a simple ding dong but not in Helen's house. Her family is obsessed with astronomy. Their door bell plays the tune of twinkle twinkle little star!
"Well, hello Zee" says Helen's mom as she opens the door. Helen's mom is always wearing something wacky and today is no exemption. She's wearing a dress with moons and stars all over it and she's wearing a wizard hat with a half moon on top.
"Hello" I respond as I step in.
"Helen's getting a shower" she says as she hands me one of Helen's magazines to read "but, feel free to wait" I nod my thanks and she returns to the kitchen. I open up the magazine and skim the pages. I'm about to turn the page when I spot an article that makes me stop in my tracks.
"Long distance friendships never last" I read as my eyes start to water. Helen and I had been friends we were 3 days old. Literally! Our moms had been friends since the 3 grade and we were born on the same week. I hear footsteps coming down the stairs. I quickly wipe my tears and flip to another page.
"Hey Zee" says Helen as she dries her hair with her aqua towel.
