Still Charlie ran. He dared not look back, knowing what he would see. Wolves, he'd counted almost twenty before they'd spotted him. Then all he could do was run.
He didn't know much about these wolves, they were different to others, more intelligent and much more dangerous. Right now they were after him.
So he ran, what else could he do? The snow on the ground was mercifully soft as his numb feet pounded into it. Behind him he could hear the wolves' harsh pants. They were getting closer.
Charlie wasn't sure how fast wolves could run, only that it was faster than he could. If he could just find shelter, somewhere to hide.
He never found his shelter.
A warm, hairy body slammed into him, pinning him to the ground. He craned his head, all the while struggling to get away from the wolf perched atop him.
Next thing he knew strong jagged teeth had grasped his arm and pulled. He cried out in pain and the wolf let out a harsh breath that could almost be called a chuckle.
Charlie closed his eyes, knowing there was no escape. His wife would discover he was missing when he didn't return home tomorrow. She'd call out rescue teams. He just hoped there would be enough left of him to be rescued.
The wolf growled low and deep in his ear and he flinched.
Somehow he really doubted it.
