Chapter 6
He smiles menacingly, knowing he's triggered an emotional response from me. He claws on my arm and draws me nearer whispering the same words into my ear. "I hate you!" I shriek, snatching my arm away. I feel a single tear roll down my cheek. I grasp Millie and secure my satchel tightly. I head towards the door as my dad shoes, "Go! I don't need you." So that's what I do. I leave.
I wander around aimlessly, stopping every now and then to see if he is following me. Thankfully, there was no sign. The rain's only a soft trickle now but I'm still shivering from earlier with my clothes drenched through. It's dark at the moment and I feel peaceful. Millie keeps chasing mice but she doesn't stray too far from me. I smile and laugh. I haven't done that in a long time and it feels good. As I walk through the streets of London I breathe, letting my worries free. We stop at a park bench and watch the wind sway the trees and swings. To any other person, this would seem creepy and eerie but to me the wind is comforting. I finally understand what people mean when they say they 'feel at home'. I feel at ease and at home - my true home.
