Chapter 2 ************** "Hey, Shadowcub, want to go explore the territory?" Shadowcub looked up. Even though she wasn't born in the pack, the others had accepted her as one of their own and she was grateful for that. "I don't know Gravelcub, we're not supposed to leave the camp until we're older." Gravelcub rolled his eyes, "Coward! Come on, we're wolves. There's nothing more dangerous than us! The others are all coming too." "Fine." All 5 cubs snook out of the camp and began to explore the River pack territory. The cubs played merrily on the bank by the river, splashing each other with clear, refreshing, cool water and sticking their paws in and trying to catch fish like adults. Shadowcub sat down next to Jaycub. They had been been best friends since her first day in River pack and could never be parted. She licked his ear affectionately. "I can't wait until we begin warrior training, we'll be able to come here more often!" He smiled back at her, "I'd like that, but I can't help feeling that we should go home before we get into trouble." Before Shadowcub could agree, Pinecub wailed, "I'm hungry! Let's go home!" Ferncub nodded in agreement. Gravelcub frowned and said, "Don't you want to explore some more?" "Fine!" They hopped over the stepping stones and carried on walking. The cubs had been walking for a while and felt tired. It began to hail. The small ice rocks hurt them so they ran or cover and find shelter in a nearby cave. "I'm not sure about this guys!" whispered Ferncub quietly. As the cubs delved deeper into the cave, they saw something truly beautiful. Huge rock formations and shape made from pure, beautiful, shining amethyst. "Wow!" "Whoa!" "Amazing!" "So beautiful!" "The Crystalrocks!" True enough, they had travelled to the legendary Crystalrocks, famous for giving wolves a chance to speak to their warrior ancestors, for leaders to be accepted as leaders and for healers wolves to get advice and warnings about the future of their packs. The cubs had been travelling for a long time and without hesitation, drifted off to sleep. The cubs woke up suddenly to the sound of footsteps getting louder and louder. A familiar but frightening scent entered their noses. They gasped as they recognised it. "BLOOD PACK!" The cubs hid in the rocks as Blood pack had an intense rivalry with River pack and were likely to kidnap them. A huge grey warrior sniffed the air and growled, "Yellowtooth, Spiderface, I smell River pack! Cubs, I think." "If they can't look after their cubs, how can they look after themselves? If they are weak, now would be a good time to attack!" "Find them, our leader will be pleased if we bring back prisoners." The cubs were trapped. The Blood pack warriors sniffed around until they reached the back of th cave and the cubs made a mad dash for it. "Yow!" "Ouch!" Jaycub and Shadowcub had each stood on a strangely shaped stone. Jaycub, a tear shaped stone and Shadowcub, a smowflake. The warriors caught up and surrounded them. They began you move in closer, there was a threatening growl and the three best warriors in River pack - Alphablast, Sleetfoot and Snoweye - leaped at the Blood pack wolves. Alphablast knocked Oakear away with two blows. Sleetfoot tore Yellowtooth's ear and sent him running and Snoweye gave Spiderface a bloody nose and chased him off. Sleetfoot rounded up the kits, "Are you all ok? Did they hurt you?" "We're fine!" Alphablast looked disappointed. "You should be ashamed! You know you're not allowed out of the camp yet! They were going to take you away and they could easily have killed you! I thought you'd know better!" When they arrived back at the camp, Jaycub and Shadowcub went to the medicine hut. Tearpool gave them poppy seeds for the pain and cobwebs to put over their cuts. "You'll live. Although you'll be left with some very odd scars, very odd scars indeed...."
