1.
I run down the sidewalk as fast as I can. I only have a few minutes before they realize I'm gone. Then that bitch will have the whole police department searching for me just so she can have me back and beat me senseless. Today was the first time any of has ever hit her back, and I feel very good about it. Although my hand hurts like hell and I think I might've broken it. No matter, I'll get it checked out by Sean later, when I make it to his house. Rain starts to fall and the cool droplets feel nice on my burned skin, the water flows over my many cuts and scars, almost soothingly. I love the rain, I always have, even before I was sent to the orphanage. I've only been there since I was 7, and I'm 17 now. I just turned 17 yesterday, but my birthday isn't something that should be celebrated. In the orphanage, it's not one more year until your an adult, it's one more year until your eligible for trade. Sirens sound behind me and I push myself to go faster, I'm almost to the turnoff, I can make it, the sirens get closer and my legs are burning from this sudden physical exertion. We didn't exercise at the orphanage very much, so I'm really out of shape. Finally, I grab the corner and swing around into the dark alley and the police cars zoom right past me. "That was close," Sean's voice says from behind me, I whirl around and shine a light down the alley way, his smiling face is revealed and I run into his arms. He hugs me tightly, "I thought we'd have to come get you," he whispers into my hair, "You should know better than to underestimate me." He smiles and takes my hand as we walk the rest of the way to his car parked behind a huge warehouse. "We got upgraded, so we have to drive to the new house," he explains, I notice the car is pretty expensive looking too, I wonder how they got so much money all of a sudden. We pull out of the alley and into the streets seemingly normal, then speed off through downtown. "The new house is uptown, Will knew a guy who was moving away and the guy said we could rent out his place. We make enough money now," "Where'd all this cash suddenly come from?" I chuckle, probably knowing the answer but just in case, "We've done some higher level jobs these past few months." He replies vaguely, I laugh, "You're gonna have to give me more than that," I nudge his shoulder and he cracks a smile. "All right, so we killed a few of this one guy's enemies, now we're getting paid by him. All of us in that house work for him, doing whatever we want basically. Sometimes he'll show up and give us specific things to do, but usually we decide for ourselves. It's a pretty good system for a whole bunch of delinquents." I nod, "Sounds great, are there other girls in the group yet?" He nods, "Yeah, one other one. She calls herself Tak, but we're not sure why or what her real name is. We didn't care all too much, she gets things done and that's all we needed. She's pretty cool though, she fit into the family pretty quick, she's even dating Kyle now." I chuckle, "Kyle..nice to hear he's still around," Sean smiles, "He wasn't going anywhere that easily," we pull up the drive of a beautiful two story house. 6 or 7 bedrooms from the looks of it. Plus there's probably a basement and an attic so that's two more bedrooms. "How've they been treating you since you ran away last time?" Sean asks timidly, "Not much better, worse actually. She was pretty pissed I'd gotten so far without her detection. She told me if I ever ran away again, and got caught, she'd kill me." Sean whistles, "Well we'll make sure she doesn't find you then," he puts his arm around my shoulders as we walk inside. Everyone's in the living room, watching a movie, then the door closes and they pause it to look over. "Victoria!" They all shout in unison, before rushing and hugging me. I haven't seen them since I was 12 so it's a shock at how much they've changed. "Damn Vicky, why'd you have to get so hot?" Ricky whistles playfully, I smile, "You grew up nicely yourself there champ," he smiles, "Why thank you," Sean hugs my waist possessively, and rests his head on my shoulder, "So you two just picked up where you left off huh?" Dean says from behind Ricky, the boys part to reveal a way older looking Dean than from what I remember. He throws me a sideways smile and I hug him too, "I figured you'd go back to Sean, he's better for you," he whispers into my hair, almost so quietly I can barely hear. "Dean we need to talk, alone ok?" I whisper back he nods and I let go, giving Sean a reassuring smile. Footsteps sound on the stairs and I look up to see probably the prettiest girl Ive ever laid eyes on (I'm not bi or anything by the way). I'm stunned, "Hey, you must be the famous Victoria I've heard so much about. I'm Tak," she smiles hugging me, "Hi, nice to meet you. What do you mean famous Victoria?" She giggles and the boys blush, "They haven't shut up about you since I got here when I was 13. Which was right after you left. But I have to say, you're much more beautiful than they gave you credit for. I suppose it's because you were 12 then and have had time to grow up some more." I laugh slightly, "Thanks. You're like amazingly pretty, you have to teach me," she looks surprised, "Thanks, that means a lot coming from you." I'm so glad I ran away, risking everything just to be here.
