I couldn't seem to get her soft voice out of my head.
I squeezed my eyes shut, willing for her voice to stop ringing in my ears, but her voice just became clearer.
I opened my eyes and stared up at the ceiling solemnly as I laid in bed.
Rolling over, I came face to face with Dexter, my teddy bear. I hugged him to me, burying my face into his fuzzy body, dreaming that it was her body.
Dreaming of her.
Dreaming of her soft skin.
Dreaming of her delicious smell.
Dreaming of way she tasted when I kissed her.
I shoved Dexter away and shook my head, clearing all intoxicating thoughts of her.
I laid back on my back and counted sheep. My eyelids became heavy and began to close around the first hundred. Behind my lids though, it was bright. It was a sunny day.
I could hear her laughter; it mixed with the chimes that hung on the trees in the clearing. We had spent an hour hanging them in our secret spot.
She skipped across my vision, her light pink dress billowing behind her. I watched as she came toward me, her hands held behind her back. She stopped in front of me and leaned forward to plant a kiss on my cheek.
“Guess what I have in my hands,” she whispered, the chimes ringing in the background.
I shrugged and leaned in for another kiss, but she jumped back and said,
“You need to guess first.”
I sighed. “Grass.”
She gaped. “I’m much more romantic than that,” she insisted.
I giggled at her expression. “Clovers?”
“Ew, no. They’re daisies!”
She pulled them out from behind her back, frowning slightly.
I took them from her and admired their beauty.
“They’re lovely,” I said, “Like you.”
Her frown transformed into a stupid grin and she pulled me into an embrace. My fingers threaded through her short, dark hair.
She whispered into my ear, her hot breath tickling me. “I love you.”
I sat up in bed at the words that she whispered to me in my dream, my heart pounding out of my chest. My breathing was rapid and I struggled to calm myself.
After a few deep, labored breaths, I fell back onto my back and stared up at the ceiling once again, a few loose tears escaping from eyes.
“I love you too,” I whispered as I tried to look beyond the ceiling, beyond the sky, and into heaven, where she was sleeping tonight.
