Winding

Lie down and listen
to your darling heart:
The fat beats of life,
Are they further apart?
Geometry of blood
In veined, vital wrist
Does patterned pulse
Ever so slightly desist?
Is the gap in the rhythm
Decreasing the song -
Cram in one more chorus;
We haven't got long.
And in that gap's silence
Does Death wait, unbidden,
In the moment heart stills,
In the offbeat space hidden?

If the meat clockwork's running
Is the coil winding down?
The muscle-hairs thinning
In this frayed skin-gown?
Can you hear the time coming
The holes in tomorrow
Where the bloom of conception
Ends as petal-fall sorrow?
If, like me, winding
Is making you fret
Just wind it up! Blaze!
Your life's not done yet!

Time

Time is eternal, yet our share is not. As sure a flower will rise in spring, with floret each lush in violet; ‘twill wilt and tarnish in autumns wing.
