Tonight I witnessed a young Manager finally lose his cool, the result of which made me stop and think deeply about how we carry ourselves throughout our lives. It was a simple, almost trivial mistake made by a young waitress which resulted in the incident. I mean, okay, any one of us could have done the same, she just through out some food that she perhaps shouldn't have done, and when questioned about it, she turned away and that was the straw that broke the young managers back. He bawled at her in front of the others and she tried to keep face by threatening to leave, which of course led to an abrupt "Fine then go if you have to".
And that was it, that was all it took. She headed off to get paper and pen to submit her notice and he just continued his duties.
So what is it that makes us try and save face when under duress in front of our contemporaries, I guess pride fits in there somewhere but it really was such a sad scene to witness. Now she will wake up tomorrow facing the prospect of unemployment after her notice period. Jobs are thin on the ground and I worry for her.
Surely as we go about our lives, our greatest battle is with ourselves and our "pride". It gives me pause for thought.
