When I woke up all was silent. My shoulder was burning and I didn't know what had happened. I was laying on the floor, my back against the dirty ground, and slowly things started to come back to me. The wolves, the trap, Red and then Scruff. He had come to save me but I had been shot by an arrow instead. He hadn't had the chance to save me but I had saved him from the same fate as his brother.
Was this death I was experiencing? Feeling the pain still of what had killed me? Or really I was numb all over and was imagining the pain?
No, the pain was there, I knew it was there.
"Why?" A voice growled, he sounded angry. I'd heard that voice before but I couldn't put my finger on where.
A female's voice replied, somewhat mockingly, "Because my real family left me. They left me, Scruffyboy, and they didn't care. Then I met the wolves and they helped me, said I could get revenge. How could I get revenge? They said that the family had taken an unexpected turn and needed the girl so the plan was set. I was to befriend her and lead her to the wolves. Not my fault you got in the way"
The girl's voice sounded like Red to me but her family hadn't left her so why would she need revenge?
"Your family leaving you isn't her fault. What are you getting from this, Red?" The guy replied, he didn't seem happy.
"I get to become one of them, what I'm supposed to be. No, you're right, this isn't her fault, it's yours" She replied, sounding like she was enjoying it too much.
"Kia?" He asked now, his voice small.
She laughed loudly. "I don't go by that name anymore, brother. I am Red ... 'Rebecca: Extremely Dangerous' ... And do you know what the best part is? No one can stop me. As soon as I turn I am to be Big Bad's mate and his wolflings trust me as they would trust him. Nothing can go wrong" She said slowly, practically spelling it out for him.
I didn't know how I hadn't realised, with all that time she spent in the woods it should have been obvious. Why hadn't it?
And then it hit me, literally. The shock of it hurt more than the pain. Out of nowhere a wolf came running out from the trees, ripped the arrow out of me with his teeth and carried on running. I hadn't realised what had happened properly until another wolf came from behind me and started to drag me backwards.
This was when I opened my eyes and looked up at the face of my mate. Into his unusual yellow eyes and for a moment I forgot completely about Red and was focused on just me and him.
