I tentatively took steps into the woods. This was the first time I'd gone out exploring, but luckily I wasn't alone.
"Don't worry, Onissa, there's nothing in this part of the woods that would harm you." Hetro reassured.
His knowledge of the woods was much larger than mine, since he'd been exploring since he was seven, and we're now thirteen. We both lived in a peaceful camp, made up of a tight group of sixteen people. The camp was split up into four different jobs. One getting food, one cooking, cleaning and making things around the camp and the other - the job I'm going to soon enter - is guarding.
"Yeah, I'll keep that in mind when a snake jumps out at me." I say sarcastically, giggling.
"More like Gurres attempting to scare you again." He jokes.
Gurres is a friend of ours who also guards. He loves pranking and scaring people, which makes the leaders of the camp sometimes doubt whether or not he should be a guard, with all the responsibility. But he's a good fighter, and a terrible cook so they let him stay.
I laugh in response and we trudge through the thick leaf floor of the woods. It's in the middle of Autumn, so it's like wading through a sea of gold. Because of this it's my favourite season. All the times I've cleaned around the camp and gazed out at the golden leaves, floating to the floor, each of them amazing.
"Hey, what are we actually looking for, and how come I don't have a weapon?" I question.
He smiles and replies, "well you can't be yet trusted with a spear, bow or net because you don't know how to use them. We're out here to prepare you if something happens."
"So Gurres IS going to try and scare me, or make me jump?"
Hetro gives a small laugh and says, "well that's not quite it."
"Quite?"
Just then I realise how much noise we're making, with the loud rustle of leaves and the careless volume of our voices, it must not be that important. I hear a twig snap in the bushes. I carry on, presuming it was a rabbit or something, although Hetro stops and listens. I turn back.
"Wha-" I begin, when he leaps at me and we fall the ground, and I see a spear fly over our heads, where I was just standing.
I simply roll my eyes, " I'll go along with it."
I roll over and jump to my feet quickly, out stretching my hand to Hetro, as he still lays on the leaves. He takes it and I pull him up. Roughly he forces a medium-length chain from his belt into my hands, and glances all around with his spear ready.
"Run!" He orders, pushing me along and starting to himself.
I begin to run, and catch up along side him. Before I could question him yet another spear comes, and hits a tree directly behind me. I swiftly quicken my pace, which Hetro adapts to with no sweat. I'm not very good with speed, but my stamina's exceptional.
All of a sudden I hear a crack, a 'woosh' sound and a splitting pain in my leg. I look down, and see a spear lodged into my calf. "What aim." Was my last thought, before darkness swallowed up my vision and consciousness.
