I just had a nightmare,
It roused me from my sleep,
Tore its way down to my heart,
Swam, and swam so deep.
The nightmare plagued my conscience,
It knew my rights and sins,
It taught me something special, that:
The nightmare always wins.
This nightmare wasn't usual,
It hit me hard and true,
It caught my very weaknesses,
Of which it somehow knew.
It twisted all my worries,
This nightmare squeezed my lungs,
And whispered evil, taunting jibes,
With green and withered tongues.
I told myself to lie back down,
The nightmare allowed it not,
And as I buried under quilts,
Into bed with me, it got.
I just had a nightmare.
I'm slick with sweat and sore,
I'm scared that if I close my eyes,
It will return for more.
