The Last One: Chapter 1

The sky was dark, as I stepped out of the abandoned store. Darker than usual. It just had a slight grey hint, and there were no stars. There weren't ever any stars. Stars that could give me that familiarity of home. They could give me that brief feeling of warmth, of safeness. Something I hadn't felt in a long time.

How I longed to see the stars. To see them shine, and know how far, yet bright they were. In that moment, I wished I was a star. No worries, no zombies, no hassle. Something I hadn't felt since that day... Before the apocalypse.

It was calm and quiet then. My mother had died when I was two. My father always told me she loved me, but I don't remember her much. But, she was beautiful. She had long, wavy blonde hair-to her waist. It was always silky, and shiny. Her eyes were greenish blue, that always sparkled with love.

I have my father's features, though. Brown eyes-which my father had told me when I was younger, sparkled just like my mother's, dark brown-almost black-hair. I have my mother's nose and lips, though.

I always do this. I get lost in my own thoughts, and cringe, remembering my father. His death. I shake my head, and continue to quietly walk down the road, grasping my axe tightly in my hand. The weapon I always use best.

I heard a creek from a little bit behind me. Now, it doesn't frighten me as much, so I don't jump a bit. But, I am already on alert-axe ready to swing. I just want to find a new place to hide, and spend the rest of my 18th birthday sulking at how sucky my existence is.

Sure enough, two zombies come limping out of the place I was just vacated in. It makes me shiver slightly, knowing that I was shacked up in the same building as them. I shake myself from my daze, and crack my axe onto one of the heads, and yanking it back out with all of my might, and cracking it into the head once more.

I figure I don't have enough time to grab the axe again, so I throw myself at the cold concrete as the other one charged me. It bought me a little bit of time to find anther weapon, and I didn't waste a second to pick up a nearby large rock. I got right back up, and jumped out of the way, as it tried to tackle me again.

When it wasn't paying attention, I jumped on its back and began to bash it's head. It moaned and groaned, and fell to the floor. I continued to keep hitting it over the head, then stopped when I felt it stop moving. I sighed in annoyance as I saw my clothes covered in blood. I only had one other pair, and I usually change once a week, or until I find somewhere to clean them.

But I had just washed them, and it just annoyed me. I stood back up, slinging my old, dirty bag over my shoulder, and fighting my axe out of the zombie's skull. After a few minutes of prying, began to walk in a direction I'd never been. After an hour and a half of walking, I passed a sign that read;

'WELCOME TO THE TOWN OF BRAYDEN'
