The night draws in around me
Like black velvet wrapped across us
Warming my arms like a blanket
Giving me refuge from the endless pain
Calling my name in the nighttime
I hear him stumble as I sleep
Fruitless searches for my missing parts
My shattered heart and broken mind
Cords and wires slip across icy water
Crackling energy like the thunderclouds
Deviant scholars with endless scrolls
Departing useless wisdom on my head
Clashing together like rutting stags
I hold them back and scream for the night
They dissolve into clouds of ash and dust
I try to sleep but the dawn light is here
I take a brush and begin to dust the sky
Cleaning the clouds from view
The sky is still pale grey and empty
He wanders back, crying fruitless tears
I hold him close, sharing in his sadness
He picks himself up and bows
Then disappears into the morning light
I call his name but he has gone now
I am left alone once again, falling
As I always am.
