Head ringing. Heart pounding. Legs bringing me to who knows where...
A vast, arid plain of dry, cracked earth blanketed the inhospitable landscape. In the distance there were buildings – battered and beaten ruins standing against the blinding sky, bearing forth intense heat as the sun gazed mercilessly down onto the skin and bones of what was left of me.
Ah! What was it now? The noise was growing now, spreading throughout my body, as if it was contagious. It was now banging my head with pain and was steadily unravelling my consciousness and letting it slowly slip away…
They were close now. I wondered what they would have looked like before the apocalypse. Perhaps there used to be dozens of them, protecting the inhabitants from the sun…
The noise was distinct now. The harsh buzz assaulted my senses and disorientated me. No! I had to stay awake.
I sprinted past the first structure, stuffed to the brim with barbed wire and bullet shells. What’s in that window, though? It’s a man! I’m… no – wait.
Where are his eyes?
But he’s waving at me!
Where are his clothes?
Well, he’s got a few rags on!
A mix-and-match skeleton stood in the window, apparently with his hand up in a disturbing position. Waving? It had a few pieces of leather flung around its shoulders and legs and had black sockets for eyes and completed this bizarre extravagant, hellish attire with one rusty old tooth jotting out of its ajar jaw.
Quick! Open door, open! Before me stood a looming, black steel door that appeared to be my only escape. They were coming… No, stay awake! Or else…
Then they were on me...
